I think I'm starting to get it

you can join a site that doesn't allow fascists locally

and blocks sites that do allow fascists on their instances if they show up in your federation feed (which is never "the world," it's based on who site users follow)

and what you end up with is

twitter without fascists :D

i mean yeah somebody might start a new site so you need the administrators to do what's needed, but it's way more doable.

you can even run that site yourself.

(She said, blocking a third fascist site)

(See the thing is fascists group up on instances in this kind of environment because they have to so mostly if you see a fascist and it's not a brand new account, it's probably a fascist site so you block a LOT at ONCE and it's very satisfying)

(3 for 3 so far :D )

ETA: OH MY GODS I JUST GOT THE OTHER PART

You know the nazi bar phenomenon, right? Where if you run a bar you let in zero (0) nazis even if they're quiet and polite because they will bring more nazis next time and eventually force everyone else out and it becomes a nazi bar. It's how they take over and ruin spaces and is why you tolerate exactly zero (0) nazis.

That's what happens at mastodon... except you can then lock them up in their own bar and out of everywhere else.

Mastodon's architecture lets you use the nazi bar phenomenon _against nazis_. :D

The 1995 P166 that has been until now door.murkworks.net has formally and abruptly retired itself. So I'm having to move the new box into place now. This is the DMZ box I was talking about earlier.

Henceforth, "Door" refers to "New Door," not the old machine that is broken. It is latest Debian.

Door has three network cards: eth0 going to cable modem, eth1 going to fixed IP LAN segment, eth2 going to DHCP LAN segment. Door is running both DNS and DHCP servers.

Door can see everything in the world, on all cards. Complete functionality.

DHCP side can see everything in the world, on all cards. Complete functionality.

Fixed IP machines can all see Door (including its DNS services), and each other, and talk to the DHCP side, but can talk to nothing living out on eth0.

tcpdump on Door shows Door handing off ICMP packets on eth0, so that direction seems okay.

I am not seeing ACKs coming back to Door on eth0 from google.com but I can't be sure they aren't doing something tricky and my filters are confused.

Kernel IP routing table

Door is 173.160.243.41 (on eth0), 173.160.243.45 (on eth1), 192.168.1.1 (on eth2). 173.160.243.46 is the modem. 173.160.243.40 is a network to eth1.

Anybody know wtf?

eta: The router - in addition to not showing door any ACKs for anything from .42 and .43 - is sending out a lot of ARP packets looking for 173.160.243.42 and 173.160.243.43, and I'm starting to think it won't talk to a gateway box in the fixed-IP range. I try to add .41 as a gateway address for .42 and .43 and it refuses, saying illegal LAN address. SUPER RAGIFICATION ENGAGED.

eta2: And the new problem is that the PS4 won't pick up the gateway information from the Linux-based DHCP server. It will pick up an address! It's also not getting the DNS server number either. Why? Fuck if I know, everything else does it right.

You want mobile Dreamwidth, Artie? You got it.

The base style REQUIRED is Neutral Good. That's the default "new user" style and is why I went at that one first. This is an extension (and something of a rewrite) of that style, entirely in CSS. It fixes many bugs on desktop, and gives you a functional mobile view of your reading list and your journal. It makes NO attempt to address system style issues on mobile.

The CSS overlay which you need to copy and paste into the "custom css" pane of the advanced style customisation interface is here:

http://solarbird.net/Livejournal/2017-04/neutral-good-update-solarbird-2017-04-27.txt

This will ALSO get you Navbar 2, the upgrade of Navbar I've been running for a while. (Yes, you can still disable it.) It will NOT get you Navbar 3, so you won't have the mobile version you see in the screenshots in my previous post. But the navbar will be better looking on desktop, and no worse on mobile.

THIS IS AN ALPHA RELEASE, only tested so far against Safari and Firefox. Please report bugs.

(Except for the one where replying to an extant comment in single-entry view causes iOS to autozoom still. I know about that one and I'll fix it. But other than that. Comments are particularly rough at the moment tbh.)

eta: Version 0.7 alpha replaced with version 0.8 alpha, same link. Abovementioned bug fixed, several other bugs fixed, more cleanup, vitally improved handling of cascading comment threads on mobile, a few other things.
solarbird: (made her from parts)
Here's a bunch of mockups of a version 3 navbar. This one does a bunch of stuff I can't do in CSS. It's still fairly close to baseline, but they want to see that, so.

(The link is temporary but it's fine for now, it's to a dropbox directory.)

These versions can't be done with custom CSS on the existing platform, they require actual code changes in the back end. But as far as I can tell, it should all be UI code changes, pretty simple stuff.

Some functionality changes, in addition to a few new links:
  • getting rid of dropdown-plus-button to trigger a view reload on the reading view filter, and just having the dropdown selector do it directly
  • prev message/next message arrows (when in single-post views)
  • prev page/next page arrows (when in journal or reading page views)
And I bumped up the RSS functionality a little bit, that's a nice feature I suspect others would use it more if they knew about it.

I've asked whether the style selector needs to be a set of top-level links or whether it could also be an action-on-selection dropdown, like reading view filter. Right now I'm showing it the old way.

Anyway, I don't really consider these really final but they do accomplish the general task of dividing into three consistent groups (user/login, current location, exploration) and adding some basic functionality (like prev/next) that really is kind of implied by "navbar," and so on.

The background gradient is just the standard system gradient and could be replaceable with anything.

eta: My thoughts are on mobile are that the three cells remain, but one is displayed at a time, and the other two are reached by swiping. Default to the middle pane, simplify the relationship permutation text for space, display a few fewer options perhaps.

eta2: Yeah, I may've gone a little nuts. Here's a run at mobile view mockups. 640x60 because iPhone 5 is 640 pixels on the short axis and Dreamwidth likes things 60 pixels high. Stupid science-related memetic disorder.

eta3: One bit of feedback I got from someone who does this regularly is that having Help on the far right is an industry standard, so I need to swap "Help" and "Home" in desktop. Also, despite the lack of space for it, I need some kind of visual indicator of swipe on the mobile bar (which I knew but was kind of hoping I'd get away without), which means we're talking chevrons for that since that's well understood.

eta4: This is getting long, so a new post: Trending tags.

tag cleanup

I've done some tag cleanup, on the Dreamwidth side only (which is why this isn't being crossposted). I might do some more. So my tags make a bit more sense now and hopefully will make even more sense soon. ^_^

The "take that ineternets" tag is, of course, remaining exactly as it has been.

As per my post on this made earlier, the new Russian Federation-compliant Livejournal Terms of Service are unacceptable; my existence is not obscene and it is not propaganda and I do not agree and I will not mark my journal "Adult."

I have disabled automatic payments and the Livejournal echos of my blog will degrade to 'free' status when the current paid status expires in several months. I have locked down comments as completely as I can without deleting/hiding all previous comments made in the past; even if it still lets you try, please do not comment on Livejournal. (You can use your Livejournal account to comment on Dreamwidth, however.) I have also disabled participation in ratings, which is too bad since I was a top 250 journal at this point - though that is far more about being a small pond than being a big fish. I have removed all references to following me on LJ on band-related sites, and so on.

And as you can probably tell, I have clicked "accept" on the TOS to be able to post this message and resume crossposting from the band blog and Dreamwidth. Most of my posts will violate TOS. That is intentional. If LJ management wants to take action based on that, so be it; assume my livejournal could vanish at any time.

I am on Dreamwidth at solarbird.dreamwidth.org and you are encouraged to follow me there.

Which is a damn shame, even if I've been expecting it since the sale to SUP. I was reading LJ when Brad was still running it out of his dorm room. But, well, all good things.

Yahoo! will be combined with AOL? Wow, it's Sears and K-Mart all over again, two more drunks clinging to each other desperately hoping to manage a straight line.

Tho' I guess in this case Verizon is in there too, lashing them together.

Fuck, this means Verizon will now own Tumblr. ノಠ益ಠ)ノ彡┻━┻

"US internet firm Yahoo is being acquired by American telecoms giant Verizon Communications for nearly $5bn (£3.8bn) in cash.

Yahoo will be combined with AOL, another faded internet star, which Verizon bought last year."

So Anna and I were walking to the bus and I referred to a “flotilla of douchecanoes” and we started wondering about collectives for douchecanoe because it’s really only a flotilla when on patrol, right?

So we came up with a couple like “a vexation of douchecanoes” and “a wankerage of douchecanoes” and also along the way “an enragement of meninists.”

But I really think more Tumblr words need collectives and also can anybody top vexation for douchecanoes because I think that’s pretty good.

SUPERB P0WNERSHIP is the phrase of the day. Zoe Quinn has been dealing with a misogynist campaign against her for months, and, whelp, guess who has been infiltrating 4chan’s chat rooms and logging the shit out of all of the entire campaign’s ops room? Oh yeah. That would be Zoe.

DEMOLITION.

Oh, her angry ex-boyfriend? He’s in the logs too, helping coordinate harassment. Hey, look, a revenge campaign for breaking up with him! SMILE FOR THE CAMERAS, DOUCHEBAGS! There’s even video. This is epic destruction.

If you have no idea what this is about, it’s about misogyny in gaming, and an ongoing campaign to force women out of gaming, focusing on several specific people, one of whom is Zoe Quinn. You can get a bit of a summary here, if you like.

eta: Judging from the h8r reblogs on Tumblr and the anonymous asks I’ve got, it looks like the attempt at “defence” here is, “It’s all out of context!” Hey, pro tip: only cite context when it actually helps your case. Unlike here. Where it doesn’t.
