This one’s going to be short and simple, I’m finally out from the jury duty process for another year (see previous post) but I’m still catching up.
Republican Conference Tells Young Women to Give Up Their Dreams & Their Birth Control. It’s Turning Point USA, of course, the fash-friendly alt-right group that’s trying to pretend they never quite flirted with overt fascism but never stopped declaring women are the source of all evil. No, literally. “Every ill that we are fighting right now in society has been brought forth by women.” Quote from the conference.
Relatedly: Trump’s anti-trans segment recently is genuinely just anti-woman in general, because it’s all about policing femininity. See also also in our state, down in Kelowna, a grandfather of one student going after two girls for being trans when they weren’t… because they had short hair so must actually be boys. That’s prime policing of feminity. (ETA: He’s been banned from school property indefinitely.)
Scientific American writes that anti-trans moral panics endanger all young people. That’s how bad it is.
On Tuesday, House Republicans voted to prohibit offering abortion care to pregnant veterans even if in cases to save the life of the mother. They also voted in the same bill to ban the pride flag from flying at Veterans Administration facilities, because again, no such thing as gay vets if they have their way. They will, I keep saying, make all of us illegal again if they can, and that is not a metaphor.
More Christian, more racist: White Christian churches as incubators of anti-democratic sentiment. Honestly surprised that it’s more general than I thought – weekly-attending white evangelicals being in the lead, that I fully expect. Their whole movement comes out of support for segregation and is authoritarian to the core. But unfortunately, it’s not the kind of gap I’d expected. (Don’t just look at the graphs, they’re confusing to the point of being misleading. Grind through the text.)
Predictably, Trump is pledging again to use Federal law enforcement against his political enemies if he retakes power. He did this while in office, too, but not very effectively; with his new plans to sweep everyone out of the civil service and replace them with absolute loyalists, he’d get further given another chance. And let’s face reality: he won’t be the only one pushing it, reality be damned.
More DeSantis-supporting nazis protesting outside Disneyland. DeSantis’ Covid record is even worse than you think – particularly since vaccines became available. Newsweek isn’t what it used to be, but this opinion piece – “DeSantis’ Anti-Transgender Extremism Is a National Crisis” – is the kind of summary we need. Florida teachers say they are “fighting erasure in their own classrooms” thanks to DeSantis’s Republican anti-LGBT laws.
Cracker Barrell posted on social media during Pride month that “everyone is welcome” and that set off the fundamentalist hyenas, because of course it did: Cracker Barrell Has Fallen.
Musk Twitter is getting sued by ex-employees for gender, disability, and family leave discrimination. Elon is, of course, making fun of it while talking to an “IQ realist” who calls civil rights law “a scam.” His lawyers should be screaming, but fuck ’em, they took this fascist asshole as a client.
