Microsoft needs to get better at its "test drive" nagware. Copied from the MurkMUSH:

At least it didn't screw up my purchased copy of Word X for the Mac. Of course, I still have no Excel for the Macintosh, because Excel has this known bug where it doesn't like some fonts and crashes on startup if you have them. The published solution to this is to remove all your fonts - from anywhere on the system - and then add them back one at a time until you find one it doesn't like. Then delete that one. Continue until drooling from insanity. Or, in my case, install OpenOffice for the Mac. It isn't great, but hey, it actually runs.

My PowerMac has some stupid Office test ride or something like that. So far, I've ignored it. OpenOffice does everything I need.

I don't like Word, but I don't like OpenOffice much either. That said, at least it runs and opens XLS documents.

I want to try Pages; I've heard that's capable but yet much less annoying than Word.

It looks pretty sweet; then again, Open Office is free. I like free a whole lot better than $80.

Oh, another question... when the next version of OS-X comes out, does it cost a shitload to upgrade, or is it like a patch? I'm a Mac noob.

x.x.1 revisions get automatically downloaded with software update. That's free. But real revisions with new feature sets (x.1.x) cost money. How much seems to kinda vary.
