I never quite grokked the "ask me to friend you" statement in your bio. I get that from the POV of if the person is a total stranger to you, but for people whom you know well, I just keep going "Huh? I need to ask you to friend me?"

I do it that way because that's how I do it. I use the "friends" list as a content filter. You can opt-in to that one, and I've taken this as a request to be on that filter. I dislike the terminology "friends list" because it's a friendship implication that isn't actually necessarily there.

I read you slightly more often than I read everyone else. (I have a horrible tendency to forget about lj for weeks at a time; I then read my friends list for a few days until I forget again. The 'slightly more often' part comes because you're one of the people I go back and individually read the archive of to catch up on.)
