The New Republic correctly describes Republican language around trans people as “apocalyptic,” noting that in the new Republican point of view, “Even tolerance of transgender people is framed as something that will end not only the United States but civilization as we know it” and “The laws proposed around the country by Republicans would make life for transgender people functionally impossible. The danger is in being under-wrought, not overwrought.”
This is a national goal; they used to levy the same language at gay and lesbian people and they will go back to that in a heartbeat if they win here. And they will make all of us illegal, and quite possibly kill us all, if they can.
In Republican Missouri, the ACLU have filed asking for an injunction to block their new statewide ban on all trans health care for anyone of any age, barring a 18-month to three-year ‘recertification’ process designed to be impossible to meet.
In Republican Montana, the silencing of State Representative Zephyr continues. The Daily Montanan is not impressed and I certainly hope their take is correct.
Meanwhile, a proposed amendment to Montana’s internet censorship bill would ban references to transgender and transspecies people, by which they mean furries, otherkin, and anyone else they decide is scary enough not to count as human. Transhumanists, I’d very definitely presume this includes you.
In Republican Florida, DeSantis’s campaign manager, Christina Pushaw, is fully aware they are creating a refugee situation, and is publicly happy about it. This article is a pain in the ass to read, as it’s a series of captions and photos, but it’s all there if you put up with the hideous interface.
In Republican Ohio, another state with a gerrymandered supermajority, the Republican legislature is determined not to let people reinstate abortion rights by initiative, so is changing the rules both to make it much harder to get an initiative on the ballot, and changing from simple majority to 60% supermajority to pass.
Workers at the Texas Department of Agriculture are now expected to dress “in a manner consistent with their biological gender” according to a memo released April 17th. The Texas Observer has the story. It’s explicitly targeting LGBT people, of course, but it’s also going to be used to target insufficiently-feminine women. The only question is how much harassment and how long it’ll take before they demand all women wear skirts.
“By any fair measure, Robinson is among the most hateful radicals to seek statewide office in the United States in recent memory,” a Christian Nationalist who condemns all LGBT people as “filth,” and has talked about killing queers. He also really does not like Jews.
Mike Pence calls ending abortion rights nationally “the great calling of our time.” That’s specifically a national ban.
Queer themed books of all flavours remain the most likely targets of bans at public schools and libraries, reports the American Library Association. Story on NPR.
Rachel Thorn on Mastodon: “The difference between coverage about transgender issues in the New York Times and the Washington Post is that the latter actually focuses on the perspective of trans folks and is premised on the right of trans folks to exist. The former focuses on the bigots and is premised on the notion that trans rights are debatable.” She links to a gift article on WaPo.
Harry Potter star Jim Broadbent backs JK Rowling’s stance against trans rights, so one might be wondering if new Potterverse actors are being screened for political compliance.
As I’m sure you know by now, Fucker Carlson is off the air at Fox. Which is great. A few articles: “Tucker Carlson gets canned; his fans blame the Deep State, Big Pharma, AOC, and/or the Jews,” “Tucker Carlson’s violent anti-trans hate leaves Fox News,” “Tucker Carlson departs Fox News, pushed out by Rupert Murdoch.”
