Trumpet, trombone, sax. Swing jazz background strongly preferred. Can you play like you should be in a late-prohibition speakeasy jazz band? ‘Cause I’ve had this one idea for a while, and I want to see whether I can make it happen.

Some of the problems I outlined in the afternoon post yesterday are cleared up, or at least accounted for – plugin status being saved and loaded is working, the asterisk cycling thing is seen by other people and also can be made to go away, loss of synchronisation when changing playlists during playback has been reproduced by dev and they’re interested – but the plugins are still problems. But I can work with this now.
Which means, I finally got to hear some percussion being done by one of our guest artists properly embedded into a mix, and wow, I am totally excited about this track in ways I wasn’t before. :D I left some space intentionally for this to be brought in, but knowing ‘a thing will go here’ is not the same as ‘an awesome thing is actually here.’ And the awesome thing that’s awesomeing around in this mix now is pretty awesome.
Because it is. :D
Also, lots of Norwescon stuff, including this year’s new stage banner, which still isn’t huge but is the largest we’ve had – and we’ve never actually had a dedicated stage banner before, we just reused the concert directions. I thought I’d fix that.
Now if I can just fix those damned plugins…

Once upon a time, I was a software developer. Actually, for a while. One of the slogans when I worked at Previous Borg1 was, “Real artists ship.”
Which also means “real artists work on their art, not just their tools.” Most of these DIY posts are about tools, not the art itself, and really, for me at least, tools are awesome but actually using them to make something is moreso.
So I’ve posted a lot about DIY equipment-making lately and will do so more in the future – but not today. Because some decisions have been made, some plans have been finalised, and it’s time to stop working on tools. It’s time to put up the Big Board2 and start making some recordings, because we are finally getting underway with the Free Court of Seattle soundtrack album.
Now, that’s really as much about DIY as anything else, since, after all, I am doing this myself. Therefore, there will still be DIY posts. They’ll just be process instead of toolsmaking. I’m not abandoning you. ^_^ Plus, I have a tools-making DIY post coming up from a guest writer in another month! So watch for that.
And that’s all for now. On the way out have some poster art I did for another band who have a Seattle show coming up in a couple of weeks. Visually, they’re way more about the light psychedelia than I am – I’m kind of the opposite of that, aesthetically – but they like the art so much they’re thinking about doing a T-shirt of it. That’s gratifying. ^_^

I’m working on a new Trad o’ th’ Month on Tuesday. I’m not sayin’ what it is, but you’ll see a post about it soon enough. This’ll be a fun one-day recording. Anna calls it the first version of this song she’s heard that she’d call “rockin’,” which makes me inordinately happy. NO IT’S NOT DANNY BOY don’t step to me ’cause I’ll do it. AGAIN. XD
I forgot to mention in the note about the track art contest (and I hope you’ll enter!): Bandcamp likes it better if the art is square. I can make it effectively square by adding white letterboxing, and will if needed, but if you don’t want that you’ll want to design for square.
