Like all civil disobedience, the idea is to shame the recipient of the protest into doing the right thing.

Read up on the history of the civil rights movement (you have heard of Rosa Parks, right?) and women's suffrage movement in this country, and Gandhi's movement to free India of British rule.

Of course, symbolic protests *alone* are not often effective, but they can make a big enough impact that they can make other efforts more likely to succeed.

oh, this made me tear up and almost cry.
i probably physically couldn't handle being arrested (i have to have another hip surgery soon), and besides i am straight - but i *AM* straight, and if we (boyfriend and i) were *ALSO* willing to be arrested? or rather, other straight couples, TOO, are willing and DO?! that says EVEN MORE - that it ISN'T "just the gays" who want DOMA and DADT to be repealed, but almost EVERYONE.
actually, i decided - my being hadicapped just makes my participation even *better*. i would do this. i would force boyfriend to do this.
