So I have this older tower machine - kimo, a 2.3Ghz intel somethingorother - that dual-boots into Ubunto Studio for audio work and Windows XP for... well, mostly for Excel, but also because it's a file server (and, rarely, a print server) in that mode.

I left it running XP when I turned off its monitor for the night last night so I could get at Excel files from my Macbook. But when I went to print some mailing labels from Excel this morning, I turned it on and saw the Ubuntu Studio login screen, because....

...the Windows Genuine Advantage update from Microsoft last night rebooted my Windows XP box into Linux.

anticipatoryETA: Welcome, User Friendly readers!

I don't have the instructions onhand (although I will find them soon) but GRUB can be configured to boot into XP by default instead of Ubuntu. Very easy to do, too.

Actually, it could be rather handy to have it default into Linux; certainly that way one has some indication that things might have gone wrong in the Windows compartment during silent hours.

Hey, what are you going to do for temperature control in the studio during summer months? Sounds as if you'd have a fair bit of heat loading in there, and no easy means of ventilation while working.

Outside of them just spending a week on Ubuntu, why User Friendly readers?

They recently did a strip on different versions of Linux. :)

Okay, point taken.

As they're about to do an "Illiad for a While", I was wondering if you'd already submitted an entry. :)
