Okay so I've been visiting this Irish bouzouki down at Trading Musician for the last several months, picking it up, playing it a little, twonking about on little bits here and there every time I go nearby, and today I made a very serious mistake: I sat around and played it for about an hour.

Christ, that was stupid. I want it. I want it bad. I mean, we technically have the money - we got our tax refund a few weeks ago - but we're still paying off the debt racked up over the last few years of medical adventures and the like. But even worse, [livejournal.com profile] annathepiper thinks I should get it, so this is a disaster. A disaster of awesome. (She's totally being a Bad Idea Bear about this. Totally.)

So I'm throwing the problem at you! GIMMIE MONEY TO BUY A BOUZOUKI! If you want. Or don't! That's okay too. This isn't like sponsoring my CD - I'm not promisin' nothin'! Other than I'll have a bouzouki. Which is, y'know: super-cool. For me. (CD sponsors please don't jump in, seriously, I'd feel really guilty about that, so don't for real. All CD sponsor money goes to the CD.)

Note: I am not pleading poverty here. We are not poor, we are not in financial trouble; in fact, we're finally working ourselves out from that. I haven't earned it; I don't deserve nothin'. I just want this instrument. Badly. Now. Hi, I'm Veruca Salt! A Veruca Salt terrified of spending money.

So if you've been all "hey, why doesn't she have a tip jar on this site?" ... well, okay, that's really because it's Livejournal and not a real blog. But! Lookie! It's a tip jar! Well, okay, it's my paypal email address, which you can use to paypal me money. That's close enough, right? Blink and you'll miss it: kahvcommurkworks.net - ha! Gimmie! Or don't. That's okay. ^_^

Bouzouki!

Sent you a little something to help. A little splurging on musical stuff is fun.
Besides it is fun to say. Bouzouki!

Showing that instrument sufficient love is a multi-person job. I'm just sayin'!

I would love to throw you bouzouki money, but I'm currently saving up to start taking harp lessons. :) Good luck!

With apologies to Janis...

Oh Lord, won't you buy me a bouzouki please;
My friends all play guitars, I'm down on my knees;
So for something different, my audience to tease;
Oh Lord, won't you buy me a bouzouki please?

It's like me wanting the hand harp, or Irish flute, I can play both, but I don't have the funds to get either one. The last harp I had was my great-gran's and she had made that one herself; but it was broken along with most of my other precious possessions when I moved to the Puget Sound. The settlement with the movers wasn't enough to get the more necessary items and a new harp.

Now, I go into music stores and play the harp, but can never afford one. Still, I love to play it, and really do want one again. I always tell myself, "One day..." and I mean it.

You're more bold than I am, though. You're not afraid to ask for funds for something like this, when you really want it. And you're such an awesome musician you deserve to be bought such a wonderful instrument. I wish I were able to help get it for you. But, I'm sure you'll get it, and I know I'll love hearing you play it one of these days.

All the best.

The hand harp is a bit smaller than the lap harp, and no it doesn't have any pedals. It does have a key that allows you to alter the tone and pitch of the strings, when playing it, though.

I'd love to hear the sound of one of your flutes, sometime! :)

I'm currently saving up money for my new digital SLR, (though some went to a friend to help with her cat's surgery.)

But as a drummer/percussionist I sympathize. I have a regular (digital) drum set and a number of other percussion instruments, but there are hundreds of percussion instruments out there.

To make matters worse, there's a great store in downtown Santa Cruz that has percussion instruments from all over the world. It's a dangerous place for one such as me.

I'm sure I would. I've rarely met a drum store I didn't like, (though I've come across a couple of pathetic examples.)

How Greece ever infiltrated Irish music is anyone's guess. Donal Luny liked the sound and Christy Moore agreed with him back in 70's.
There is nothing like getting high and putting on Planxty hearing the distinct plinking sparsed by Donal's singing and Liam O'flynn's pipes (seeing his Seamus Ennis bequethed 200 year old Coyne Flat set made me feel as though something divine was visitng).
This decade long Uilleann piper heartily approves of your choice of instrumentation.

Actually that came about from the Celtic King Milesios, in 14B.C. marrying his sons to sea-trader's daughters to get better deals on goods than other kings of the Isles. One was married to an Egyptian Pharoah's daughter, if the stories of that age (that have survived) aren't too exaggerated.
