On the way home from errands just now, I got to listen to NPR report the accounting changes today as "part of an attempt to improve transparancy" when it is in fact exactly the opposite. Very tasty!

The way I heard it, they were saying it went against efforts to improve transparency. Though I did tune in in the middle of the report (and thanks to you I knew what they were talking about).

The version I heard (at, hum, 1pm Pacific) was specifically led in by comments on G20 pledges to increase transparency, and this was specifically called out as part of that. They closed the report with comments saying that some opponents had said it would reduce transparency and so on, so they did give at least a little time to, you know, the reality side.

Given the timing....it could also mean some of their own people got a chance to look at the report and went "oh, no, this is just....wrong."

That may have been a fairly early report, and basically written by someone who wasn't thinking about what they were editing/writing.
