more on torture

solarbirdA couple of brief notes on torture; normally I'd have put this in the previous post, but the topics are different enough here that I wanted to separate them out.
Dick Cheney continues to lie about Gitmo, the people there, and efficacy of torture. He lies because he can, and possibly because he might even believe some of it, not that this matters in the slightest. He lies because he knows a subservient political press will let him, and because a subservient Congress won't investigate and won't act.
He also re-implicated - perhaps the right word is re-confirmed - Democratic leadership complicity in not just massive secrecy but also illegal domestic spying programmes. I don't think this is a lie because, well, there's not really much of anything new in this, it's just a reconfirmation of previously-known material. But it's interesting to see it keep popping up.
So there you are. It's too late for econ tonight, there'll be a long one tomorrow. I didn't expect this week to have much to talk about, honestly; normally the week around Christmas is dead, dead, dead. But not so much this year. That'll be tomorrow.
