Holy crap, it's official; this dog is dead. The sad part, of course - politically speaking - is that it took a GOP revolt to kill it, and the Democrats were still ready to give Mr. Bush's administration functionally everything they wanted.

I'm kind of amazed they called the vote without having the votes already assured.

The question now will be whether they decide to put something together that will actually do some good and pass that, or whether they'll just say fukkit and go home. That latter option would be bad indeed.

Wanna bet when things fall apart they'll blame the Democrats though. You Controlled the House that failed the bill.

They already are. Saying it failed because of Pelosi's comment on "failed Bush economic policies". This is going to get nasty.

CNN said, "It was mostly Republicans who helped to kill this bill." Of course they did; they want to go home and say that they voted with the will of the people.

The Republicans are now saying that they did have the votes assured, but then the Speaker's "partisan speech" turned a bunch away.

The tally is on the House of Representatives' web site (http://clerk.house.gov/evs/2008/roll674.xml). I see that my congressman, Pete Stark (http://www.petestark.com/), was among those opposing the bill.

There was a huge amount of voter backlash on this, with phone/fax/email jammed to the gills 300 to 1 against. I imagine it must have had an influence on how things played out. I'm stunned just the same, though. It was close, and now the carnage (which would have happened anyway) is unleashed.

It is far from unheard of, when the Congressional offices are buried in voter opinions, for Congressmen to tell their leadership exactly WHAT they can do with their directives. It doesn't happen often, but it's a spectacular shock to the system when it does.

Check Tip O'Neil's "Man of the House" for an example.

Sounds like they'll be back Thursday. It's going to be interesting to see how they'll come up with a plan that will attract conservative Republicans and liberal Democrats. Or maybe they'll say the hell with the Republicans and focus on rounding up enough Democrats, which frankly the Republicans would probably consider a gift.
