I'd rather be hard on picks than hard(er) on strings and hard on the instrument. (I've never accidentally tapped wood, but why risk it? ^_^ )

They were cheap picks. But I liked the feel, so it's a shame.

Interesting failure mode, Barrington-Smythe! It appears that the Mach limit was exceeded within the material, which therefore experienced a rapid transition from ductile to brittle deformational mechanisms. I suspect the propogation of shatter-cones within Hutton vortices. Shall we have a look at it under the ion microprobe?

they make finger picks (I guess for banjo) out of metal. Maybe you should get a metal pick XD

Does the pick material affect the tone of the instrument? It would seem to me that something relatively hard like metal would have a sharper, perhaps more grating sound when plucking the strings than would a softer material such as plastic.

Pick material very much affects instrument sound; I don't even like the thicker, more rigid plastic picks, so I think metal would be... a mistake. For this instrument, anyway. There are other plastic picks I have been using that hold up much better; I just liked these, and they were cheap, so it's kind of a shame they don't survive.

I'd also be terrified of the damage I'd do to strings with a metal pick. I already lose strings more often than I'd like - I have to play quite loudly in these open-air markets, and while I do have the loudest mandolin evar, apparently, I still really do need to go to. With a metal... I think it'd be bad.

Before this comment, I was thinking "semi-precious gemstones would be cool".

Now I'm thinking you need to rock your geek a little... build a pick dispenser you can attach somewhere that you can pull a pick out in between measures. :-)
