I love parrots. This one (named Yosuke) got lost, and told the vet he was handed to his name and the address where he lived, and they took him home. Ah, isn't that better?
<snerk> One of the best benefits of the League is the freedom to rant at them endlessly. What're they gonna do? At least, as long as your membership is paid up.
k, i know NOTHING about the care & feeding of avians, except not to bring bread to the tame(ish) ducks at the lake, and that buying the birdseed (May to Aug) at the nearby wildlife education centre raises money for the centre. But would it be outrageously mean to connect a 100ft (minimum) leash to a parrot's ankle *before* opening the cage? Because if Yosuke was MY bird and he took off on me like that, I'd want new handling procedures when he came home so it didn't happen again.

Leaving aside the difficulty in doing that with no cage access, that would strike me as dangerous to the bird. Birds are unfortunately easy to strangle, which is why cage bar spacing is so very important. Also, 100' of leash is going to be extremely heavy, as far as the parrot - even a large parrot - is concerned.
