The economic case for 6A selling to SUP is pretty clear:

Russian use (active accounts, site visits, both in thousands, from here, the Russian-language news and support LJ):

Global use (a different figure - posts per time period, 85% non-Russian, but still indicative of direction) since 6A took over and started pissing everyone off (same source):

So there you are. Seems pretty obvious to me. SUP has a real opportunity here if they take it. Mind you, the very next post is someone asking if there's an easy way to delete all comments they've made across LJ as part of deleting their account.

(a) any major change will have *someone* jumping ship. (b) Given what s/he was linking to, I'm not sure but what we kinda wanted this result...

But, yeah. They sure got their own people fired up...

The complainee looked to be a pretty scary customer, or at least what he was pointing at, and seemed to be in sympathy with, was... advocating posting clearly not just TOS violating but get-you-serious-state-pen-time-in-this-country kind of things...

Well, it will be interesting to see how this all works out, and perhaps one of the assembled multitudes will offer some hints on custom localisations for LJ. I would like to have a Layaklan translation of all the theme-generated text (for its aesthetics, rather than for security); however, this might induce a certain WTF attitude amongst they wot don't know us well enough to appreciate the humour of it.

E.-- sneaking in here sideways ^_^

Account number growth in cyrillic segment is easy explained by advertising campaign, integrating lj in blog search in yandex, etc. But
activity decline since 2005 is because unsatisfied (or less satisfied) users are migrating to other systems better serving their needs - lj-based, myspace, blogger, etc. How can SUP fix it?
Making lj a better myspace than myspace itself hardly can fix it.

I've followed several of the links, read some of the chatter.
I'm no closer to having a good understanding of what the real ramifications of this sale are.

Should we be considering leaving livejournal? Any pros/cons to this?

It's good to know I'm not the only one so confused by this. :-)
