Okay, so the new thing on LJ is "adult concepts" and "adult content." You can rate your own journal and/or individual entries, which is a "meh whatever," but also! Any other LJ user can flag your journal and/or entries as inappropriate content. There're little flag icons everywhere now, you may and may not have noticed. Two or more flags get you sent up to LJ-Abuse. Mmmm, that'll rev the fucktard activity up to 10,000,000,000 real fast.

All that's extremely annoying, but that's not all of it! There are also viewing options. 6A, in their wisdom, for example, has set my viewing preferences for me to filter search results and to "collapse" - lj-cut, basically - all "adult concepts" and content. So now I have all these stupid fucking LJ-cuts in my friendslist. But even better - it won't let me turn that off. The other options - "only protect me from some skeery things" and "don't be a fucktard at all, I know who the fuck I friended" - are greyed out! For my own protection, I can only presume.

[livejournal.com profile] hughcasey is talking about the bullshit here. So! What'd they set your preferences to today?

I figured out, you can set the year of your putative birthday in your profile, turn off all access to it, and it will let you into the interesting stuff. No month or day required. I used 1922, the birth year of one George P. Burdell of legend. It didn't complain atall, much less ask to see my ID.

Yahh, did something similar straightaway.

Got me thinking, too, "just who do you want to stay in touch with, anyway, and, if so, wny not just talk directly?" -- I'm a big believer in the kindly art of letter-writing, anyway.

This whole business is going to backfire in some very interesting ways. Let's hope that the open-source movement can come through with a solution, soon. Not much of a geek, here, but can act as guinea-pig and try to break things in my addle-headed way. ^_^

Smart person probably should review her/his/their interests list again...

Let's see. Mortimer Snerd objects to complex marriage. SNICK. Euphronia Glump thinks muleibrity refers to abuse of livestock. SNOCK. Aloysius McCoy thinks lifemating is immoral. SNECK.

Yup... well, I still like tuberoses and dahlias, and I think crocheting book-covers is fun...

Make sure you have a birthday set in your profile. If you don't they treat you as a child (well they do anyway...but if the date is set you MAY be able to edit the view options)

I think the random setting they shove on your journal might be based onw hat age you have set (or not set - I don't have an age listed, and I got the same as you).

Sweet! Her birthday is the same is mine. (Except for the year. :)

I'm getting confused as to the various settings. The 'search' setting defaults to 'moderate' but it looked like the setting up top was set to 'no adult content'.

I should totally set my journal to "rated x" just to piss off everyone.

I'm displeased at the lack of notification on this. A post to lj_biz AFTER the fact does not comprise notification.

If you don't set a birth year at all (and why should I?) it assumes you are a child.

I'm following Charlie Stross's example. Go here (http://community.livejournal.com/lj_biz/243697.html) and mark this post as "Offensive Content."

"Adult Concepts" is just BS. Whatthefrak is an "adult concept," anyway? To me, it translates as "abortion and gay people" – you know, the stuff under-eighteens aren't supposed to know exists. *rolls eyes* There also seems to be confusion as to how easily people can flag others' content as offensive. Oy vey, LJ.

P.S.
The system isn't totally stupid, since it claims 1888 is an "invalid" birth year. 1935, however, is totally plausible :P

Adult Concepts!

Ya know, like...

Roth IRAs
Responsibility (teenagers might flirt with this, but we'll just close our eyes and pretend they don't. la la I don't see you!)
slide rules (just about gotta be an adult to know how to use one of these)
buggy whips
Geritol
worrying about the kids (so I guess some under-18s who're trying to compensate for some younger people's incompetent parents are really adult)

pretending that under-18s haven't heard of sex
pretending that the Internet doesn't let people under 18 see...well...you know...

Who thought THAT was a good idea!? Are the ppl running LJ SO removed from reality that they couldn't see the PROBLEM with doing something like this on the internets? xD

You can change your preferences at http://www.livejournal.com/manage/settings/

I set it to view adult content but collapse, myself. Makes the friendslist theoretically worksafe while viewable at home.

How many times in a row can you flag your own journal offensive? And do you think they'd catch on if you were flagging not only something you, yourself wrote, but something set to private so nobody else could read it?

I almost wanna. :)

They have to be at least somewhat dim, having come up with the policy in the first place.

Maybe we should do a marathon mature-rating party and see what they do with that?
