SPLINTER WHISTLES WHEN SPUN! Splinter is a singing staff! In addition to being a flute and a walking stick. I mean, it's perfectly reasonable, I'd even wondered whether that would happen when I first toyed with the idea of making a flute like this but then I forgot about it. Until just now, anyway, when I was screwing around in the living room and OMG WHISTLE. ("TYRANNOSAURS in F-14s!" "This is SO cool!" "This is SO stupid!")
Anyway. Shouldn't be going OMG about my own instruments. Sorry. Right. Back to the new melody segment, which is what I was screwing around with when I discovered this surprising flute property.

whistling staves
Date: 2007-11-05 09:11 pm (UTC)The walking-stick I use in the field is made of telescoping segments of stainless-steel tubing, with spring-button detents that work in a series of equidistant holes. The whole thing will telescope from 105 cm to 40 cm, including handle and foot. It just might be visible in the icon above, owing to its red and white reflective bands.
An unforeseen consequence of it being hollow and possessed of holes is that it makes remarkable whistling noises when the wind is blowing strongly (or when I have it slung by its carry-strap over my back and am descending the ladders of the air-shafts). That's what got me thinking of wind-turbine air-chimes in the first instance (thinking dual modes there: blown by the turbine-fans, and also struck if they start to sway in a high wind).
The neighbours, so far, have not threatened to burn my place down because of the strange noises from the porch, but perhaps they're waiting for drier weather again?
Splinter sounds way fun...
