I am not sure it's a good idea to just wave through anybody that looks right. Good old-fashioned basic customs work caught the dude trying to come through on the Anacortes ferry bent on blowing up our fair city. That said, the bovine scatology they're putting would-be artist visa holders through is enough to fertilize all of Kansas and maybe some of Oklahoma. Just freaking ridiculous.

Question for you: What do *you* think we should do with the individuals ultimately responsible for the goings on at GitMo and such like? I'm thinking a short drop and a sudden stop, or at the very least a nice long stay in the prisons they used to run (after a thorough security check and realignment, natch).... but I haven't gotten any comments on what other people are thinking...

As for the monkeys... I'd heard about sacred cows before, but this is maybe going a bit too far. From my POV, I was endowed with a survival instinct and a brain, and any Entity that's gonna get upset about me using them is one I want no truck with...

The most important thing is that the argument of the unitary executive - the core concept that the president is above the law, and, in fact, can make the law as he or she sees fit - must be repudiated, and in no uncertain terms. This requires impeachment. This is what should happen. Then individual trials could be held charging various individuals with crimes as individuals; there would not be Constitutional crisis.

However, this will not happen. Accordingly, we no longer live in a limited-powers Republic, but have a kind of elected king, which is extremely bad. It does not help that the current chief executive - and several members of his administration - are clearly guilty of war crimes with regards to torture - specifically, the same torture crimes the Allies prosecuted successfully against various members of the Nazi regime after World War II. The only way those will ever move forward is if another country tries members of the administration, ala Pinochet in Chile. However, particularly given the lack of impeachment, such trials should move forward, somewhere. And the details of sentencing for convicted war criminals are reasonably well established in US law - or rather, would be, if US law mattered in this respect anymore.

The last time we had something like this, the threat of imminent impeachment drove the President from office. Then again, Dick Nixon had *some* concept of honor, and like Henry II, semi-willingly paid the price for his overzealous men.

The political reality of the situation is that impeachment simply isn't *possible* in the time he has left in office, because you have to get the new Dick first, being as he is *far* less honorable and more dangerous than the old Dick. The further political reality of the situation is that between the Current Occupant's style of dealing with recalcitrant individuals (Valerie Plame) and the lack of votes in the Senate, it's not wise to try anyway. In a perfect world, yes, impeach the Scooter Skater.

I think we may have to settle for trying him after we use some other method to force him from office. I *hope* that method can be a ballot box. But that's what we did to the *other* tyrant in this war; instead of impeaching him, we threw him out, and then we caught him and let his countrymen try him and hang him. Hm.

I think we can make the law matter again. We just have to keep putting the truth out there. And you do a good job of it.
