solarbird: (molly-wistful-rain)

Nearly continuous thunder for 15 minutes up here at Murkworks North. As one thunderclap dies down, another one starts, with occasional - occasional! - gaps between. What we're used to, for non-local readers, is rainstorms with two or three thunderclaps being a big deal. I've never seen anything like this here.

Okay, it finally started raining, but the thunder is still going. I don't think I've seen anything like this here before. I've seen it in the midwest, but not here.

Funny, not so very far North of you the weather is doing not much of anything. I'm jealous. I love a good thunderstorm and I haven't seen one since I moved from Winterpeg in 1972. Our little Cascadian storms fizzle out far too soon.

This sort of thing most likely happens when cloud-to-cloud lightning transfers potential repeatedly until the excess charge is equalized, or discharged to the ground.

It made for an interesting ride into work. It was flashing like the paparazzi, and when the edge of the front came overhead the curtain of heavy rain was mixed with hail that kept ringing the bell on my handlebars.

You may be getting what we had earlier this morning. Innumerable thunder rolls in an otherwise merely solid gray cloud cover. I only saw one flash, in the clouds, at some distance. And only a brief and uselessly limited spatter of rain.

We were having some serious heat lightning here the other night when it was so bloody hot that day. It looked like an atmospheric rave with the clouds almost strobing. It was bizarrely cool. Never seen anything like that before even with all the thunderstorms that happened in SE Texas where I grew up.
