I've got an inverter that works off of a car battery; not a lot of power, but probably enough for a CPAK or a TV/DVR (probably not the widescreen). You'd need to leave the car running, though. Want me or Daniel to bring it over?

Sustained winds of 20 MPH? I can handle that, and so can the trees that didn't fall down during the 40 MPH sustained winds of the last storm.

See me, fate! I tempt you!

Ought to be fun for the PSE crews that are supposedly out there 24/7, repairing things at a snail's pace until WEDNESDAY or THURSDAY or MAYBE THIS WEEKEND, STOP CALLING US.

Given that they're apparently completely rebuilding most of King County's electrical infrastructure, let's hope that they're building it slightly sturdier this time around.

BAH HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA

Here's something I can't figure out: at the height of the storm, we lost our electricity but NOT our phone. Aren't they on the same bloody poles, or do they have the phone lines buried?

Probably both on poles. They are here. Beats me.

It's Verizon, they probably beam the phone service through their beady little hate-eyes.

If it's Verizon, you probably NEVER had phone service, just a little doodad in your NID that makes a dial tone sound.

Phone lines are generally more resistant to this sorta thing. They're typically physically stronger than power lines. If a pole falls partway over and the power lines touch *anything*, including each other, they'll tend to short out. The phone lines can flop onto the road or coil around themselves and they'll still work. It's also possible in a lot of cases to re-route phone calls around a break; power lines typically have fewer options.
If you look on a pole, you'll see that the power lines have glass insulators to protect them from touching the poles and each other. The phone cables don't need that kind of delicate handling.

Ah, thank you for the explanation!

EXT. GOLDEN GARDENS - DAY

DEMETER sits on a rock, chatting with POSEIDON.

DEMETER
They didn't get the hint.

POSEIDON
No?

DEMETER
No. Their power's coming back up. They're still knocking down farmland and putting up ugly tract housing. Plus, if I have to hear one more WAR AGAINST CHRISTMAS rant, I'm going to teach somebody what Pelops' shoulder tasted like.

POSEIDON
Talk to Hephaestus about an earthquake. I could always drown them for you.

DEMETER
Claim the land for the sea on your own damn time. I think I'll have another word with Aeolus and see if the next windstorm doesn't get the message across.

Beat.

POSEIDON
Um, has Persephone called lately?

DEMETER
No. You'd think she could at least drop me an e-mail, I'm only her mother, for Zeus' sake. Why do you ask?

POSEIDON
No reason.
