there were THREE bees in the living room last night.

there are TWO MORE bees in the living room today.

last year they were in our mailbox. and that stupid lawn ornament i threw in the trash.

STOP SENDING US BEES, DAMMIT!!!

god damn I hate bees. time for more bee nightmares, I guess!

also I think problem 19 on our midterm had two correct answers and I don't know whether the one I selected was the right correct answer, and I'm pretty sure I failed my memorisation roll (god, go figure that?) and remembered the wrong charge for a polyatomic ion. I hate memory tests. :(

ETA: THREE MORE WHEN I GOT HOME AAAAAGH! (thank you [livejournal.com profile] risu for getting rid of them for me). Also, [livejournal.com profile] risu says they are actually wasps that look like bees, and not actual bees.

You're not allergic to bee stings, are you? One of my parents' neighbors almost got killed by a bee that way. I'm not helping, am I?

God, I hate memorization tests. Except in the rare case where that's the skill you're supposed to be learning, it's just irritating and pointless, since it avoids testing what you're actually supposed to know. Unless it's knowledge that you *must* be able to access so quickly that you can't go flipping look it up (I suppose in some medical contexts, this might be the case), making you memorize it for the sake of exams is dumb.

The bar exam had some sections that relied pretty heavily on that, which sucked, but at least it was on essay parts, which mitigates the problem somewhat since partial credit is possible. In at least one case, I ended up writing something like, "I can't remember. I can, however, remember where to look it up, which is _____, and that is of course what any lawyer would do in actual practice. For the sake of answering this question, I am going to assume it's X, and given that, the answer would be Y, for reasons A, B, and C." Apparently that was at least in the ballpart of "good enough" (or I did well enough on other parts that it didn't matter), since I passed, but Jesus, way to add just a little more stress to a really stressful situation.

Mmm. There are a few cases (apart from the obvious ones like foreign languages) where memorisation tests are justifiable - basically, where it's things that you will need to know in order to do later tasks without taking an unfeasible amount of time. I agree that generally it's pointless though.

The nice thing about the enigineers' exams is that they allow you to bring in references. This actually tests something important: knowing what references you need to check for a particular problem and how to find exactly what you need in them.

BEES or WASPS?

Because I've had wasps sneak their way into my house, my mailbox, the kid's playhouse, etc. The bees? They gather their pollen and go on their merry way.

The wasps? I KEEL THEM WITH NO MERCY, MOO HA HA HA
