Fair's fair: the Dartmouth student mentioned in an earlier political post has disgraced himself and his school by admitting to being a giant lying jackass.

ATTENTION, EVERYONE: DO NOT MAKE SHIT UP. EVER. IT NEVER HELPS.

Christ on a fucking crutch, how stupid is this guy? I'm really pissed off at him.

NEW BEDFORD -- The UMass Dartmouth student who claimed to have been visited by Homeland Security agents over his request for "The Little Red Book" by Mao Zedong has admitted to making up the entire story.

The 22-year-old student tearfully admitted he made the story up to his history professor, Dr. Brian Glyn Williams, and his parents, after being confronted with the inconsistencies in his account.

Had the student stuck to his original story, it might never have been proved false.

But on Thursday, when the student told his tale in the office of UMass Dartmouth professor Dr. Robert Pontbriand to Dr. Williams, Dr. Pontbriand, university spokesman John Hoey and The Standard-Times, the student added new details.

The agents had returned, the student said, just last night. The two agents, the student, his parents and the student's uncle all signed confidentiality agreements, he claimed, to put an end to the matter.

But when Dr. Williams went to the student's home yesterday and relayed that part of the story to his parents, it was the first time they had heard it. The story began to unravel, and the student, faced with the truth, broke down and cried.

The sad truth is, there are enough abuses of government powers and harrassment by government officials out there that we don't need people making up stories about them. This dimishes people's response when real abuses take place.

Having been through the mill with the Government on more than one occasion due to 'non Politically Correct' activities I'm pretty familar with the routine, which is why I was originally skeptical about this person's claims.

Exactly. The right-wing media will now be able to claim 'all stories of government powers being abused are lies that threaten our national security' or some similar insanity. The public will fall for it too, because of this one story.

'The Right Wing Media'? What media is that? Fox news? Fox news has been drifting left for sometime now, just look at the shows, they've only got like 3 conservative talking heads left.

And what about the 'Left Wing Media'? Back when Bill Clinton was in office the abuses of power by him were far beyond anything this country had seen in ages, yet the Media gave him a complete pass.

But in this day and age the media matters less and less, the bloggers on the internet are enough to bring more and more stories to light and the public eye (I myself don't even watch network or cable news anymore), what we have to be wary of is the old 'boy who cried wolf' syndrome. We must examine all the stories critically and make sure the true ones get heard.

And the false ones are quickly exposed for what they are.

Yep, [livejournal.com profile] banner showed me the link as well. No excuse for this one.

Idiots like him don't help those of us trying to highlight real abuses of government power.

Exactly.

There's no justification for what he did, but it also doesn't mean it's not really happening elsewhere.

Things like this just make the true stories harder to believe.

Credibility is not the only problem. Our efforts in tracking down abuses could have been diverted by this hoax, leaving less time and fewer resources for proving the real abuses.

I saw that in the paper this morning and I rolled my eyes so hard, the rattling was probably audible outside my head. What a MORON. As others have said, enough trouble without making shit up, ruining credibility, etc.

If he needed attention that badly, couldn't he have run around naked or something?
