I know some people will hate me for saying this, but I thought it was kind of fun. The Analytic section, in particular, is the kind of thing I do in my spare time anyway. Yay, logic puzzles!
The verbal part isn't that terrible for an avid reader, and in a CS program, they're not looking for an 800 here, so it's not that stressful. A bit hard to study for beyond brushing up on your Obscure Vocabulary.
Math is the wild card. It's none of it terribly difficult stuff - they aren't asking for partial differential equations here - but for most adults, it's been a while since we've done a lot of the algebra stuff that they ask. So, this is where I'd focus study. At least for me, and I admit to being an outlier in how natural math comes to me, it didn't take too long to reconnect those old neural pathways, and then it was a cinch.
(The hard part, for me, was the massive glut of unemployeed engineers when I considered going back to school. Then again, I was one of them.)
Also, being able to go into a test facility and do it all via computer, and get immediate feedback on my score _rocked_. So much better than the SAT scantron in a classroom experience.
Yah, I've been doing all the math practice stuff they have. Mmmm, forgotten maths!
I am doing the test facility for the computer version, but you only get a partial score back. And I hate that you can't leave a question and come back to it later like you can on the paper tests. That suxx0rs.
Hm. I will be in Seattle this weekend; would you like to meet somewhere and get the book, maybe Saturday afternoon? You should probably just look at their description of the analytic section and not worry about the rest of it if you've been doing the online ones.
I tried to google for GRE to find out what the TLA meant, but only got a bazillion hits on sites promising to make GREs easier if you paid them much money...
Graduate Record Exam - it's a standardized test that graduate schools use, along with letters of recommendation and essays and all that to decide who they're going to admit.
