Yay!

Picked up a copy of Twilight in the Desert at the library last night and read it. I have significantly greater respect for the technical prowess of Saudi Aramco now. I'm going to read it again before returning it to the library and will have more commentary after that. But my first impression of the book is that it's very rational and, at least on the surface, the research looks very good. It also collaborates some data I've been picking up from other independent sources. More analysis on that after I read it again.

I've finally figured out what Inuyasha is doing in this sketch I started, too. Now I can finish it, yay. ^_^ In the meantime, have a flower I saw down near the bus stop on 25th NE:

I haven't been carrying spazzkat's camera around lately. That's dum. I need to put it back into my backpack. I've missed at least two good opportunities for flower pictures in the last week because of that. Bad me!

Ummmm.... Not.

You know, that almost loks like a hibiscus. On closer look, and trying to peer at the foliage, I would say one of those Cannas, but that doesn't sound right to my ear either.

I had some flowers very similar to these in my yard in Panama City, but they were a brilliant red, rather than the orange. I don't suppose you could snap a pix of the green part tomorrow, could you? I would love to find out what these are... Not that I like orange, but more along the lines as I love the flower.

By the way, how do you post these pix in your LJ? Are they hosted somewhere else?

This particular cultivar is the 'Tropicanna'. The family name is Cannaceae (canna family), and common names include canna, canna lily, and Indian shot. These hybrids have been known as Canna X generalis, or Canna X orchiodes, depending on flower characteristics, but they've been crossed too, and the distinctions are now largely lost or forgotten. Nowadays most experts include all the canna hybrids under Canna X generalis. And indeed there are hundreds of named cultivars, ranging from less than 30 in (76.2 cm) to more than 8 ft (2.4 m) in height, in colors from creams to yellows, to oranges and reds, and with a colorful diversity of leaf patterns as well.

Of course, I really was NOT trying to be a smart ass, but I REALLY like your flower pictures. They always brighten my day. :-)

I use the <img> tag. ^_^ And yeah, they're hosted on my account at murkworks.net ("Causing confusion and dismay for the last ten years!"), our household co-op demi-ISP. We have about 40 users and provide DNS, webhosting, mail, and other stuff for people we think deserve it. ^_^
