+1: Bucky Birthday Bowling! It was fun. I did okay - 120, 90 (My wrist got tired), 111 (switched to a lighter ball). Generally, I'm happy with anything above 100, and my goal is "roll the ball straight." ^_^ The best part was the bachelor party a few lanes down; they were dressed up in silly costumes and any time any of them rolled a gutter ball they had to go ask someone for change! So after this happened a couple of times, [livejournal.com profile] kathrynt decided that she needed to make the next one sing and/or dance. And volia, it happened again, because she kept giving them change, so I made a couple of scorecards out of napkins (2.0, 2.6) got [livejournal.com profile] mamishka to hold one up while I held up the other.

Then they all came over at once suddenly when Paul was getting his cake and sang him happy birthday, which [livejournal.com profile] kathrynt had also sneakily arranged. I made a "9.8" sign for them for that. ^_^

Afterwards, [livejournal.com profile] spazzkat and I played more Halo 2, which we're slowly working through in co-operative campaign mode. I like it; I don't play games much unless someone else is around, in which case it's GAME ON MOTHERFUCKER and all that.

+2: Pleasantly lazy today. I like pleasantly lazy days. [livejournal.com profile] annathepiper's gone off to do some SEKRIT shopping (tho' I could have gone along if I'd really wanted to), but I didn't. I'm going to draw as soon as I feel ever so slightly less lazy.

-/+3: Up late last night fiddling around with song lyrics, which was fun, and something I never, ever do. I'm pretty sure they're terrible. ^_^

-4: With all the political crap and all the seasonal extra stuff, and working on 5038, I've hardly been doing any of the things I've supposedly been trying to make time to do. I need to make myself do that kind of thing, but even when I have time, I'm feeling too ragged out and kind of just don't, and sit around being lame instead.

+/-5: Going to try to drop by the UW HITs lab again next week. Good to do, but nervous. Also, I have the name of a researcher whose papers I need to read all of. Yay! ^_^ (The minus is for the fear part. LA!)

+6: [livejournal.com profile] annathepiper actually wanted to go to a party she was invited to the other night, and we did. I spent a little of the time drawing (it was a writer's party, and I knew no one there) and then spent the rest of the evening telling the owner how to remodel her house. Surprisingly, this was not obnoxious and annoying, but was rather appreciated, as she's early in the process now and just fired a designer before even hiring her. (Apparently, she was a fool.)

I hopefully stopped her from trying to turn her midcentury modern into a prairie-style/arts-and-crafts mix, because you genuinely can't do that without doing a disservice both to the house you ha(ve/d) and the house you're trying to make. I think I showed her how she could get a lot of the kinds of elements she wanted - and also open up and brighten the place a bit, ironically in part by re-subdividing some of the rooms where she'd removed walls - without going that route. She seemed really enthusiastic about a lot of the design plans I outlined, and I think they'll help the house a lot without violating it. Many of the design themes she wanted implemented weren't really specific to A&C or prairie, and could be worked in quite well. (She's particularly fond of horizontal linearity, which her house actually needed more of to make its original architectural themes hold up better. It's kind of stunted, as a house, because the builder tried to hybrid two modernist styles together, and it's less than entirely successful - but on the inside, I'm fairly certain it can be perfected without even spending too much money.)

Fundamentally, I'm a firm believer in not trying to fight the architecture of a building. If you hate an architecture that completely, sell the building and buy another. On the whole, trying to force one idiom atop another is simply going to fail. Not always, certainly - but most of the time, and certainly at the kind of budget most homeowners are working within.

On the way home, I noticed another house in the neighbourhood that someone had tried to convert into a mostly-craftsman mostly-bungalow. It looked like they spent a decent amount of money on it - it was hard to be certain, being late at night and dark, but I could see that they'd reframed windows, tried to rebalance the building, resided, re-trimmed - it had originally been a clone of the house I'd just been inside.

And it really, really didn't work. It looked like a collection of puzzle pieces improperly mashed together.

She said I should consult on house remodels for money. I admit I think about it occasionally. But I have so many other things to do!

You are fresh-ground coffee, black, first thing
in the morning.

You are a life-giving substance. The US government
has secret stockpiles of you hidden in caverns
under the Rockies. When for some reason you
are late to a meeting, world financial markets
are thrown into chaos. Your presence can cure
warts and mild depression, and when you enter a
room, you diffuse a gentle fragrance that
reminds people of the happiest moment of their
childhoods. Cats and children adore you; they
curl up at your feet, where they torment small
crawling things and occasionally lick your
toes.

What kind of coffee are you?

Dark
You are the DARK DEMON. This doesn't mean you're evil,
only that you're a mystery. You obviously have had a painful
life, and sometimes try to hide under a mask of emotionlessness.
Your privacy is what's important to you, and your skill at getting
back at your enemies means you're someone who should
not be messed with.

Which of my demon forms are you?

At least I know I'm not the only one who can't bowl that great... I love bowling, but am always afraid that I'll make a fool out of myself... I think on average, my score is around 120-130...

As for remodelling/consulting... may I hire you whenever I get the money to buy my own home? ;)
