So I'm listening to the intro of "Catch You Catch Me" and I suddenly realise that I'm listening to slide trumpets, an instrument which, of course, does not exist (and I don't think can exist), but that despite this insufficiency of creation can now in fact be heard, courtesy of the creative use of sampling synthesizers.

I'm listening to the sound of something that doesn't exist.

I think that's really cool.

Heaven
You came from heaven. Your goal in life is to help
others and to make the world a better place.
Some call you weak, but in reality your soul is
very strong. If only more people were like
you...

Fire
Your element is Fire: Strong, hot tempered,
powerful, and passionate.
Being fire, you are quite strong and powerful;
people look up to you greatly and often seek
your protection. You have the ability to gain
many friends and you are always one people can
count on to do what you say you will do. You
are extremely loyal, be it friends or family
you'll stick up for them and you are never
willing to put them in a position that could
hurt them. You know what role you play in life:
leader, and you intend to let people know it.
Not everyone is capable of leadership but you
certainly have the willpower and flare to do
it. You have quite a temper if it shows itself,
one that can often lead you into trouble. Once
your mind is made up there is no changing it,
but no one said that was a bad thing.

Indie

Which 1990's Subculture Do You Belong To?

Indie:You belong to the indie subculture. You hate the mainstream with a passion. The best things in life are the things nobody knows about. You're very picky about what you wear, what you listen to, and who you're friends with. You hate it when anything goes mainstream.

  1. Fair enough. I didn't know they existed until I googled for it (though it seemed odd to me that somebody wouldn't have tried to build such a thing at some point)

  2. For the brass instruments, what affects the sound are basically the shape of the mouthpiece and the diameter profile of the pipe, choices for the latter being mainly between:
    • cylindrical bore, i.e., stays mostly the same width for much of its length (trumpet, trombone)
    • conical bore, i.e., starts small, gets gradually larger (cornet, french horn, baritone)
cylindrical is more penetrating, conical gives you a broad mellow tone.

The point being that something that uses a trumpet mouthpiece, is of trumpet length and has a cylindrical bore, may as well be a trumpet (and that goes even if the pipe is twisted around a bit differently).
