Revving my Active list back up
Nov. 11th, 2004 11:22 amFor those who don't know, I used to run a fairly useful Active! list for people fighting the various pro-censorship (Communications Decency Act, et al), anti-abortion-rights, and anti-queer initiatives of the late 90s. I'm revving it back up, for obvious reasons. I got a lot of information out of monitoring fundamentalist political radio shows, and I'm doing that again.
E.g., the latest call to action - a national campaign to get anti-gay letters written to newspapers across the country, which involves a reasonably clever and simple letter construction kit, with 64 possible outcomes. That's hosted here. By having form letters, you get better response from your membership; by having different letters, you trick newspaper letter-column editors into thinking they're getting unique letters when they aren't. (Many newspapers have policies against publishing form letters from movements like this; the construction kit is an attempt to get around that.)
There's also an attempt to get Arlen Specter booted out of his turn at the head of the Judiciary, and yes, that's still going on. It's payback for stepping even slightly out of line.
Anyway. If you want to be on this list, let me know. You should know how to get mail to me already.

Date: 2004-11-11 12:07 pm (UTC)Since I don't have cable and can't monitor Fox news and the like, I watch the 700 Club on the mornings I have class late. Their latest push is to get the Senate to change their rules so that a simple majority can break a filibuster instead of a 3/5 vote. My politics professor thinks their effort will bear no fruit since it's not in the Republican Senators' best interest to change rules to drastically for the day when they will return to the minority. Still, if conservative Senators are getting flooded with "I voted for you now do what I say" mail, it wouldn't to fight that message.
