I wanted to talk to this guy and totally forgot. (And partly never had a chance anyway, to be honest.) Is that an actual lute?

These guys looked awesome in real life. The flash used in this photo is distorting the effect quite a bit - in RL their makeup work looked impressively natural. Not to mention hott.

That is an actual lute; I talked to the guy in the elevator.

Looks like a lute to me. Very much like the Arabian oud in shape.

Seconded (and thirded, from Lisa), about the dark ones. They were most impressive.

i always think of lutes as... sort of U shaped, with strings running up, sort of like a small harp. i KNOW this is incorrect, but it's always the first image that pops into my head.

so, aside from my insanity - why is the neck bent like that? i have never seen that [which makes me wonder, a LOT, because i was very very very very very involved in multiple music programs in high school, and a bit post-high school, madrigal, classical, some renassaince and medieval, and of course the ubiquitous SCA stuff...]

as an aside to an aside, do you know anyone who plays hammered dulcimer? i learned how when i was 8 or9, and played for several years, until my teacher moved away and took his dulcimer with him. i doubt i'd be any good anymore [althought it's one of my goals, once i get the med stuff under control - i think dulcimer was my FAVORITE to play] but i MISS *HEARING* it. it's been 6 or 7 years since i heard someone play a dulcimer...

and thanks for the drow, even if their sexual dimorphism was backwards lol :)

THANK YOU!

I'm the hammered dulcimer player :) ... I learned from Mick Doherty in Portland (http://www.oregonshadowtheatre.com/recordings.html). He also played in an awesome kinda jazzy folky band called the Whamdiddle Dingbats (http://www.ilike.com/artist/The+Whamdiddle+Dingbats).

My recording you have to get direct from me ... $15 to Ellen Eades, 4616 25th Ave NE #771, Seattle WA 98105. It's called The First 30 Years, and it's contras, Irish, swing, ragtime, with guitar, fiddle, accordian and bass.

Cheers, Ellen

first - sorry for taking so long to reply! i did not get a notification that you did so :( silly LJ

second - do you have your own website? [i cannot this week spend $15. but possibly next friday, as in the 23rd. if i don't lose you again, although i'm gonna bookmark this page...]

question - guitar, fiddle, accordian, bass - no dulcimer in the recording? [although, for good rag, i might be ok... but the quest was for dulcimer music, and considering how much i miss having a dulcimer... yeah :) ]

i take it you prefer "mail you payment" - do you have paypal or some other way?

thank you!

I understand that he made that instrument by hand himself.

Perhaps the contact on that photo could put you in touch with Stanley so you can ask him about it.

(The photographer of that image).
