Haus!

We finally have another haus we like. Click here for listing pictures; it's big, it's on a quiet street, it's not an architectural style I'd have picked (1960, needs updating inside) but I can handle that; I like the layout. (It's unusual; three wings.) It's a little over a third of a mile to acceptable bus service and half a mile from Burke-Gilman. The downside: it's in Kenmore. The other downside: it's also a little over 1/3 of a mile from Bothell Way, so there's highway noise, about at the level of the wind chimes in the back yard. That's a lot less than I've got now (courtesy 20th; we hear traffic inside, even after soundproofing), but a lot more than zero. And occasionally I can hear the dock noises from Lake Washington's last industrial dock, 3/4 of a mile away. But that part I'm okay with; it's kind of cool.

Go here and scroll down for the MLS listing, and go here for the nighttime pictures I took of the inside. (Some of them are still huge, sorry; but many are small.)

So, anyone know anything that screams HORRIBLE MISTAKE FOR THE LOVE OF GOD NO?! out there? Anybody?

EDIT: For some reason, the pictures don't want to load clicked from here. Go to the MLS listing and click on "See additional pictures" for the outside/realtor pictures. It's the second listing, the one in Kenmore.

checking it out

If you are going to take a look at it, I may be able to go with out and do a bit of an unofficial inspection? Looking at both phisical issues and practical functionality. Extra eyes never hurt.

Plus it's near Kenmore Camera. I like Kenmore Camera.

("near" being "closer than I am now to that particular store")

Do you mean did I like the place? I did. I actually like ca 1960 architecture you know. Open, spacious, light. You'll love the space to live in, much better than older homes. I hate to say it but it's true.

There is a Germany company reproducing that stuff. There was one product that hung on since the 50s. Super cheap and called Fritzoleum or something (no, really) but it finally went out of business 2 or 3 years ago. Another company took up production, swanked it up a bit, and it's selling for like $14 per square foot. You could have fossilized limestone for that much. Anyway, it's very cool - comes in like black with sparkly lavender & red, all kinds of combinations.

There's one thing about it that screams HORRIBLE MISTAKE FOR THE LOVE OF GOD NO?! to me.

Letting it get away!

You do the intellectual evaluation where you recognize its assets and liabilities, decide things like whether the price is reasonable for the overall package. Then you check your inner feelings, gut instinct, or whatever you call it, that can sometimes tell when you might be making a mistake even though you can't see the reason for it yet, or other times can tell you you're doing the right thing. If it passes both of those tests, grab for it as quickly as possible.

Hesitation caused me to lose the first house I placed a bid on. (The one next door to the one we ended up with in Lexington.) I was lucky that I didn't end up regretting that, because the one we got instead was better and cheaper. (And almost identical.) The second house we got, we wanted to place a bid on it within 24 hours of seeing it, on our second day of househunting. (We couldn't, but that's a long story. Anyway, we kept hoping it would come available again, and it did.) The third (and current) one, was a little harder. We didn't love it immediately, but after eliminating all the other possibilities in the area, decided we could probably live with it. Didn't take long after closing for it to win us over, though. :-)

Good luck!

hi.

wow, that's a very big house!

we remember the home buying process and it's really f'ing scary!

It seems really neat and nicely unique. we like that it's not a big box, inside or out. i like all the angles in the rooms.

oh, was also very impressed with how thorough it seems like you've been at just looking at everything in the house.

oh, and the outside space has really neat energy. at least that's how it feels from over here.

anyway....good luck. we hope it goes well, and relatively non-stressfully.

be well,
storyteller
