Some day, I'll try to track down exactly how old the 'casting runes' thing is. So far, my best guess is 20 years. But then, I'm an old cynic...

Well casting of runes goes back a long long ways. In 82 that book came out by Ralph Blum and got a lot of people into it. However those runes and that whole thing isn't related to the runes you have above as there is no neid in that set. Kenaz's definition is also a bit different than in Blum's book. The meaning for Algiz is completely different as well. So I suspect this site relies on someone elses work/interpretations. (not claiming it to be less acurate either)

I remember when the 'rune stones' book came out and people got all interested in it. (1982) The big 'thing' of the runes was that they weren't supposed to predict your future (unlike say taro cards) but point to the things you needed to think about and consider, to help guide and focus you. Not tell you what the future held.

As for how much the author made up versus was actually true, no idea. But I have one of his books around here somewhere.

Properly used, Tarot cards don't predict the future either. They do exactly what you just said about runes, pointing to things you need to look at and consider, to guide and focus you.

(sorry..one of my buttons)

That about fits my guesstimate of 20 years, at least :) I did have a quick look at some of the more scientific norwegian rune sites (ie, written from the point of history or linguistics rather than new age), and they say the only mention of using runes in anything resembling this way was some quote from Tacitus about the goths using runes for prediction. Scandinavian rune users would (as far as I can tell from websites and dim memories from history classes) have had too much respect for runes to throw them about. Anyhow, just a tiny hangup of mine there.

I suspect you are most probably correct. Divining or tossing or whatever it is they did with runes back then probably bears little resemblance to the stuff people are doing these days.

Odd. The way I learned it, neid (need) is utter lack. As in the loss of home with no help on the way, ever.
