Think of all this in the context of Trump and Trumpism as an all-corrosive system, as illustrated by the latest Big Lie – the lie that all this legal action against Trump is purely political revenge and he is an innocent man. Think of it also in the context of Trump’s promise of payback for prosecution follows years of attacking democratic traditions and in the context of House GOP ponders action against DOJ in defense of Trump and in the context of Fox News: Rogue Employee Wrote Chyron Affirming Trump Indictment Lies.
Then think of it also in terms of the MAGA pastor who just said “Christians need people who are ‘willing to strap bombs to their chest’ like the Muslims.” Think in terms of the Moms for Liberty cult threatening to remove political officeholders “1776 style,” e.g., at gunpoint via revolution. Think of it also in terms of the Republican Party, the Party of Political Violence.
And think of it in terms of internal refugees, because that’s what we have now: US Internal Refugee Crisis: 130-260k Trans People Have Already Fled Republican-held states. One example is Karen Krajcer, who writes here on the “Safe Folder” she built out to protect her trans child from the Texas government – all before the latest rounds of healthcare bans, when Republican Texas Governor Greg Abbott was “just” directing Texas’s Department of Family and Protective Services (DFPS) to investigate the parents of transgender children for child abuse in 2022. They are now one of the refugee families, having relocated to Oregon because Texas became too dangerous.
Think of it that way, because that’s what it is.
I’ve said this a lot too, here’s someone else saying it, maybe that’ll help: Whether you’re trans or not, the gender police are coming for you too: A man harassing a nine-year-old girl for not looking feminine enough shows the war on trans people is also a war on all women. See also the Southern Baptist Convention going hard-line against women. It’s all the same thing.
LGBTQ+ adults do not feel safe and do not think the Democratic Party is doing enough to protect their rights, which is correct, and polling shows that fundamentalist blood libel is working. They’ll make ALL OF US illegal again if they can.
Detroit-area city bans Pride flags on public property. This time, it’s socially-conservative Muslims, not the usual suspects. Let’s be real here: Abrahamic religions mostly suck donkeys. Judaism isn’t so bad, but all the sequels are just fucking rancid.
What the fuck, Seattle Public Library? The Gender Justice League has barred the Seattle Public Library from participating in the Trans Pride event on Friday, June 23, after the library decided to rent a large auditorium at the downtown library to former child star Kirk Cameron, a conservative activist who is touring to promote his latest “traditional family values” picture book. Cameron hates all LGBTQ people and considers Pride to be “dangerous,” and considers being lesbian or gay to be “unnatural” and “destructive to so many of the foundations of civilization.” They’ve previously rented space to the anti-trans hate group W*LF, and while they have a point in the whole “first amendment” argument, I kinda think exterminationists might fall outside that umbrella, but clearly not.
(Not idly, he also considers public schools to be “public enemy number one” and, like the rest of his movement, wants public schooling ended. That’ll get as much worse as they can make it, particularly with events like the College Board finally finding its spine.)
Republican Indiana’s ban on gender-affirming health care is the latest to be put on hold by Federal courts. But don’t expect that to be a wall that holds forever.
For background, the Washington Post are finally writing about the American College of Paediatricians, the cardboard-science fundamentalist group most successful at ginning up fake science to justify anti-LGBT hate. I have written about them, and many other groups like them, in the long history of Fascism Watch and Cultural Warfare Update. Hopefully I’ll manage to find time to put more from the 90s online – these groups are a constantly recycled feature of the fundamentalist group, eternally re-presented as new and serious and sciencey and are always, always, always nothing more than organised lies.
And people fall for it every. goddamn. time.
Talking of DON’T FALL FOR IT YET AGAIN, No Labels – who I’ve warned about before – Is Helping a Firm that Raises Money for Right-Wing Extremists. It’s not a real third-party, it’s a fash stalking-horse being funded by the far right to hand the 2024 election to the Republican Party. DO NOT FALL FOR IT, and DO NOT LET FRIENDS FALL FOR IT. Because mostly, Americans fall for that shit over and over and over again, no matter how pathetic and clownlike it might be. See also the “Family Values” vs “Groomers” lies, while the “family values” side is systematically covering up child rape, defending predators of children, and facing expanded charges of human trafficking.
Republican Texas governor signs law shutting diversity offices at public universities, as part of their emphasis on how college is really pretty much just for straight white cisgendered men. He’s also just overridden local laws requiring water breaks for outdoor workers (10 minutes every four hours) in the state with the most work-related heat deaths, because of course he did.
Once again, I ask you to show me how you reform this: Minneapolis police routinely used excessive force and discriminated against Black, Native American people: DOJ. (American law enforcement needs to be torn completely down and rebuilt from the ground up.)
Finally – and I may also post this separately so if I do, that’s intentional – Elon Musk, speaking at a conference in Paris, said that he bought Twitter Inc. because the social network was having a “corrosive effect” on civil society that he hoped to improve, apparently by literally recruiting Nazis and other fascists, ramping up hate speech and harassment against people of colour, Jews, and women, and making it by far the worst major social media platform when it comes to LGBTQ+ safety by doing things like actively promoting anti-LGBT groups and pushing anti-trans propaganda into the feeds of over a hundred million people.
Of course, to him, we are the corrosion, so I suppose it makes a kind of sense.
What doesn’t make a lot of sense is Steve Huffman of Reddit seeing Musk’s handling of Twitter “as an example for Reddit to follow,” unless, like Musk, he’s pivoting to some variation of full-on authoritarian bastard mode.
To wit: “Long story short, my takeaway from Twitter and Elon at Twitter is reaffirming that we can build a really good business in this space at our scale,” Huffman said, even as his actions brought widespread protest and unrest, and as Musk Twitter is being evicted from offices due to unpaid rent. Not to even mention the loss of the bulk of its advertisers and almost two-thirds of the value of the company.
He can even lie like a mofo and say, “We, even in disagreement, we appreciate that users can care enough to protest on Reddit [and] can protest on Reddit” while simultaneously threatening the protesting moderators behind the scenes and also reverting and/or undeleting individual-user-edited or deleted posts en masse directly against those users’ wishes. (This may be illegal in Europe, lawyers are trying to figure that out now.)
Huffman’s not being real political about this yet, other than the “STOP TALKING TO EACH OTHER AND GIVE ME YOUR FUCKING MONEY” course change, but a lot of hard turns to authoritarianism start with GIVE ME YOUR FUCKING MONEY, so now he’s on my watch list. I’ve logged out of reddit, and have signed up on kbin. It’s rocky going so far as they only went live like literally… a month and a half ago? And it shows. But I like the software, rough edges and all, and I want to be ready.
And I’m definitely not interested in giving Reddit any more content. What you do, well – that’s your call. Do what you’re comfortable with, it’s fine, it’s not some kind of Nazi farm.
