SI, AI, trash-I

Every day is a good day to leave Twitter. I guess this is one way for Elon to get more engagement on Musk Twitter: load up everyone’s “For You” timeline with his tweets. Also, I guess that’s one way to distract from the hundreds of thousands of Russian disinformation accounts on Twitter. It’s a twofer!

What can you even say here? It’s not quite as bad as the bill to ban teaching scientific theory, but DeSantis’s idea to end Advanced Placement courses in Florida is along the same line of thought – or lack thereof – and a lot more likely to happen.

Meanwhile, he wants to ban investment in anything Republicans don’t like. By state pension funds, anyway. Got to pile everyone into as many fossil-fuel stocks as possible, no doubt.

The attacks on LGBT-but-particularly-T people, most particularly trans kids, continues as South Dakota bans medical care for trans youth. This is all 100% against both medicine and greater science on the topic and will harm and will kill trans children, and they’re just fine with that.

For just a little while, a few years ago, I thought we might finally get to see what happens when a generation of queer kids grow up unbrutalised – but, well, they’ve certainly put an end to that.

It’s what the GOP do with power.

If you’re in Washington State, some words to your state rep or senator in support of SB 5599 would be nice. We’re setting up to be a refuge state, and we’re already getting LGBT and reproductive care refugees. This law strengthens that by not requiring that trans kids and under-18 people seeking reproductive health care be ratted out automatically to their abusers. It’s a small change, but in a refugee situation, important.

A couple of quickies: If you’re American and in Russia, don’t be – seriously, get out. The one cop in the Tyre Nichols video who hasn’t been arrested is white, and also has been lying about the incident. Why isn’t he under arrest?

Finally, Bing’s new “AI” chatbot interface is impressive as hell on the surface, but not only does it get basic facts hilariously wrong (seriously, don’t trust it), it’ll spill its guts to anybody. (Hi, Sydney!)

As part of Google’s 12,000-person layoff, Youtube gutted their disinformation management policy team. That seems bad.

Bing’s Chat AI Sydney will not only give you wrong information, it’ll fight you about it. Spoiler: it doesn’t take correction well. And that’s hilarious! But also a real problem, particularly given how confident it is.
