Don't use these twitter alternatives

Turns out that Hive and Post don't give you the ability to share links to posts, making them truly closed services, working to wall you in as much as possible.

This is terrible. In this way, they are the literal opposite of mastodon. Please do not use these services.

eta: Since I apparently need to clarify: there are no links to your posts made on those sites. If you post on Hive or on Post, you can't share a link to that post.

This is a classic walling-in technique since it requires your friends to get accounts to see your posts.

the best mastodon feature: time-limited muting

The best feature mastodon has which twitter doesn't have isn't the edit button, though that's certainly nice.

The best feature is timed account muting. When someone or some group is just a little much right now, you can mute them for a few hours, or a few days. Or indefinitely, of course, that's still an option though I don't know why you'd do that and not unfollow.

It is the best. damn. feature I never knew I wanted.

post.news is sending out some pretty skeevy vibes

Post is sending out some pretty skeevy vibes. They're not actually up yet, though they do have a single visible post stating their philosophy that includes a signup button.

But they've silently edited that one visible post since it went up. Here's the original version, which unlike the current version does not include gender identity, but did include net worth as a protected class.
