In 1998, I tried to get anyone who would listen to pay attention to this little political experiment Pakistan was running in Afghanistan called the Taliban movement. I wrote political leaders, I talked about it on mailing lists and with friends, trying to get other people interested, and quite frankly, nobody (from any party or of any political persuasion) gave a rat's ass. Apparently, we haven't learned a goddamn thing.

Everyone else has linked to it already, but the section on V-J day alone makes it worthwhile: [livejournal.com profile] liz_marcs writes about Pearl Harbour and 1941.

Does anybody know if this is as obscenely bad as it looks? Session 9G: “...And Beat them Lightly”: An Analysis and In-Depth Discussion of Verse 4:34 - reportedly a seminar at the Islamic Society of North America's national convention. The description says that seminar on beating women is "to understand how this verse is to be applied as a protection for women, not as an abuse." Because beatings are good for you! Fuck that noise.

Can we Sack Donald Rumsfeld Now? Please? Please? Money quote: "In fact, said Brig. Gen. Mark Scheid, Rumsfeld said 'he would fire the next person' who talked about the need for a post-war plan." (Spotted by Andrew Sullivan.)

Still no sign of either lettuce or carrot sprouts in the winter bed. I hope nothing went too badly wrong while I was in hospital. The winter cover crop - snow peas - are doing okay, tho' are coming in rather slowly.

Perhaps it's just still too hot for them. I can hope. It's been a very late-running summer. The forecast - which is useless this far out - says we can expect autumn to arrive later this week. Perhaps that will help.

Today's (Monday's) miles: 0.5
Miles out of Hobbiton: 1311.9
Miles out of Rivendell: 846.9
Miles out of Lothlórien: 391.9
Miles to Rauros Falls: 17.1

I am inappropriately sleepy. This keeps happening. I wish it would stop. Hopefully next week. It had better stop by the 28th. I need to be awake in school!

I feel totally useless. Today I did things like "catch up on email" and "do paperwork." We got some of our first insurance paper receipts today, which come before the actual bills do. @w00, thrilling. At least physical therapy seemed easier today than yesterday. (But then, it's supposed to.)

This is an odd one:
