After dropping the car off in Bothell for work - it's making this weird skating/rattling sound that could be a belt issue, could be something else, I dunno - I initially planned to walk down to the highway and catch one of the several Seattle-bound busses, all of which make a stop at the stop near my house, but then I decided to walk over the hill instead and maybe catch the bus over there, and then when I was over the hill I kind of just decided I'd keep going and see if I could find any east-west connectors in northeastern Kenmore north of the highway, and failed except for a pipeline right-of-way which I was very glad to see when I found it, and which wasn't too muddy. And then I just decided I'd keep walking all the way. It ended up being 5.3 miles, and let me stop and get groceries and bird-cage liner, which we needed.

Along the way, before getting to Kenmore's downtown, I discovered that the Moorlands - and I still don't know whether these are the "upper" or "lower" Moorlands - extend well north of 522. This is interesting because I didn't know what that area was called, other than knowing that's where Swamp Creek runs. I discovered this when I found the Moorlands water station, while walking along the pipeline route.

I also discovered what I have to think is the oldest surviving house in Kenmore, one I've heard mentioned but hadn't seen - an honest-to-god late-19th-century Victorian as in "exactly what you think of when you think country Victorian," complete with turret, sitting out in what would have been farmland not all that very long ago. At least, that's what it looked like from the street; the lot was pretty heavily overgrown, and my view was occluded. It got a lot of work in the 80s, I'd guess - new windows, new chimney - but is otherwise intact from the outside. It's run down a bit since then, but isn't in too bad shape. I desperately hope that whoever buys it the next time it's on the market does not tear it down, but restores it instead.

I also found a fair amount of surviving older (pre-war) Kenmore housing stock along 183rd, walking north on it trying to find said east-west connector, including one or two other former farm houses, one of which might have been for what may be an operating nursery. (They had nursery-style buildings in back.) Plus I found a depression house (read: shack) still being lived in, despite a clear tilt. Several other older houses had redevelopment notices up in front of them, but none of them struck me as particularly good examples of their types, and most weren't that old (40s, probably) anyway.

Tomorrow the garage will look at the car. Hopefully it'll make the noise, so they can find it and fix it, and then I can pick it up. Yay.

Wednesday's miles: 5.3 (walking)
Miles out of Hobbiton: 575.5
Miles out of Rivendell: 115.7
Miles to Lothlórien: 350.7

These aren't flowers; these are berries, on a shrub in front of our house. They're common around here, tho' I've no idea whether they're local or imported. I imagine imported, but I could be wrong.

Gothberries

I really want to get somebody to stand in front of the stone Bothell High School sign with a rolled-up newspaper just so I can take a picture. The cougar drawing is just so pathetic! "Please don't hit me with that newspaper again!" <whack!> Which is funny!
