July 4th is a great time to try to get through to your Trump-ish family and friends

Do they really want judicial authoritarianism?

If they’re not just saying “yeah, America needs a dictator,” remind them of what they believed eight years ago about judges and judicial activism, and ask them how a judicial dictatorship feels.

Ask them how they’d like Clinton and Obama being literally above the law, because they are now, thanks to Trump’s judges.

“We are in the process of the second American Revolution,” Heritage Foundation president Kevin Roberts thundered on Tuesday in celebration of the Supreme Court’s decision granting Donald Trump, and all future presidents, sweeping immunity from prosecution. This judge-led revolution, he added ominously, “will remain bloodless if the left allows it to be.”

When a court that has been battered by near-weekly reports of undisclosed oligarch-funded vacations (and gifts and super yachts and tricked out RVs and secret conferences with high-paying Koch supporters getting access to justices) decides to make it easier to bribe public officials—as it did in Snyder v. U.S.—that’s a very public signal that the conservative supermajority does not care what you think.

When a court that has been caught with not one but two justices who have spouses who were excited by insurrectionist activity and symbols stands up those same justices as dispassionate and objective deciders of three separate Jan. 6 cases, that’s a very public signal that the conservative supermajority doesn’t care what you think.

And when that self same court makes it illegal for homeless people to sleep in parks because not one of these members of the conservative supermajority will lose sleep over homelessness, climate change, housing policy, or any of the other root causes of being forced to sleep in a park, it’s a very, very public signal that the justices don’t care what you think.

Whatever braking mechanism once existed at the court is now broken. We wake up this summer in a new government order.

It doesn’t matter if you can’t get them to change their minds today. Plant the seeds of doubt, one at a time. Slow them down, prevent them from herding stays back into the fold, maybe make them stray a little themselves.

Now is the time to get through to your Trumpy family and friends.

Counterpoint: I have heard it suggested elsewhere that anyone on the Trump train at this point is a lost cause, and we should instead be trying to motivate non-voters, the apathetic, the "they're both bad options" crowd?

That's coming up.

Yes, work on them, absolutely. I have been. It is probably more important, and least as important, and you should really be doing both.

The people who think they're both the same are either very low info voters (who I've been talking about regularly already) or young and left voters. I'll circle back 'round to low-info soon, but the big pitch for the young and left is next week, when it's not a 4th of July holiday and there aren't family gatherings coming up.

(Although really what I've been doing the last couple of days is trying to get the panicky flighty bastards reigned back in, and holy shit that is a full time job by itself.)

Also also, I don't really expect anyone to turn a Trump voter. But someone sniffing at him, you can stop that. And about as importantly, you can maybe rein a Trump voter's enthusiasm down. Plant those seeds of doubt, make them have to think about it some so maybe they're not so rah-rah after all in a month or two and while they're still voting Trump, they're not giving him money and they're not working his campaign.
