Major bugfix: This should be the first post everyone actually sees in ages!

If you can see this from any Federation instance (Mastodon, Misskey, Firefish, Akkoma, etc), please take a moment to hit the reply button! I want to see if posts are getting out properly again. I can’t see likes from this side (yet), so those won’t work, sorry – they actually have to be replies.

Basically, the good people at ActivityPub for WordPress dropped a bug fix today for a problem a lot of people have been working for a while. It prevented most followers from actually seeing new posts. Some people would see them, some people would see them for a little while then stop seeing any new updates at all.

It’s even hit me directly – I’ve regularly stopped seeing my own blog posts federate to my own Mastodon instance, as in the one I literally run.

So if you’ve followed me here and wondered why no posts solarbirb? There have been posts. There have been a lot of posts. They just haven’t been going out to most people. But this should fix it.

(The issue has been that no more than 10 instances could have actual working follows at a time. Which ten those were changed at … something akin to random. This was not some sort of attempt at crowd control, it was an API issue that’s now been fixed with a drop this morning. So mastodon.social users were very likely to see updates and I think have been working the whole time. Most other followers… eh? It was pretty random.)

Hey, it's all bleeding-edge stuff, I'm good with it. I mean, I don't like the bugs but I expect there to be issues.

The Federation had to scale up dramatically in very, very little time and we (they, but I think I helped) kinda pulled it off! We aren't the Next Big Thing yet but there's a lot of groundwork being laid for the next opportunity, and this is absolutely part of that. Nothing like this existed before now for the blogosphere and this kind of de-isolation of Wordpress is kind of a big deal.

eta: Oh oh oh the bigger thing that happened is that reply changes started being federated back in to the blog properly! This entry has like 11 comments from the Federation, vs, you know, the usual none because they mostly haven't been making it back. :D
