TechCrunch: Twitter to end free access to its API.

Historically speaking, this has long been the opposite of a good idea. As Steve Ballmer was mocked for chanting - despite being right! - the absolute key to software platform success has long been third-party developers, developers, developers.

However, Musk Twitter seems to want to keep people from being able to tell when they're lying about disinformation and hate speech. This will severely harm online research, which I imagine is about as much the point as is the monetisation.

I heard about this initially on Mastodon from a third-party Twitter developer whose company wasn't affected by the bans on third-party clients, saying that if this goes through, they're off the platform.
