Where were you...
When John F. Kennedy was shot (11/22/1963)
Not alive yet! ^_^
When Mt. St. Helens blew (5/18/1980)
I don't remember this. I know that it happened, but I don't have those memories back yet.
When the space shuttle Challenger exploded (1/28/1986)
On my way through Brown Science Centre back to Forrer Hall to see whether it had launched yet - it was late, and I'd had a test - and I ran into Dr. Miller, who, when I asked whether it had gone up yet, told me it had blown up. I told him, "That's not very funny," but he wasn't joking.
When the 7.1 earthquake hit San Francisco (10/7/1989)
UK! Well, not at UK per se', but at the Loudon House with Cync and John and Anna and some other people. We were actually watching the World Series, so we saw them go "Voop!" off the air, which was funny, but we also saw a bunch of people go "Voop!" offline so that made us go, "um... something bad just happened." Then it turned out just to be the earthquake. ^_^
When the Berlin Wall fell (11/7/1989)
I didn't follow this nearly as well as I'd have liked to. School was insane and all sorts of other things were being very weird, and - agh, it's all such a long story that it's not worth it. I knew it happened and I knew how important it was, and I managed to see some CNN footage on a friend's TV, but I wasn't following it as closely as I'd have liked.
When the Gulf War began (1/16/1991)
"Stereo 59 WVLK - Your kind of radio station!" I was working there and I brought in the AP wire release. I'd tried to get Rick to go with the story before the AP sent the feed, because I'd been monitoring CNN, but since I only did sports, and wasn't a direct employee of the station (it's a long story - I was still in school, etc), Rick didn't trust me enough until it went over the wire. So! I was RIGHT and he was WRONG, and the whole news staff got in trouble for not being there. That part was kind of funny.
When OJ Simpson was chased in his White Bronco (6/17/1994)
Microsoft! That would have been during the Exchange 4.0 Death March. I was in a nice sheltered cove away from the main hell, working on Mail 3.5, so that's actually a pretty good time for me. (Check for my name in the server credits. It's not my fault, I swear to the gods all my code works great.) I didn't hear about this one until the next day.
When the building in Oklahoma City was bombed (4/19/1995)
Microsoft again, and again, I didn't hear about it until later. Still in Exchange (Hi, I'd like to Exchange this for a mail product that works, please) group, but getting ready to GET OUT.
When Princess Di was killed (8/31/1997)
At the 55th meeting of the World Science Fiction Society at the World Science Fiction Convention in San Antonio, Texas! Yeee-HAW! {giggles!} So basically, on vacation. ^_^
When Bush was first announced President (11/7/2000)
That was insane. In my current house, watching coverage a lot, wondering what was going to happen next. I was engaged in a couple of major projects at the time, but nothing that wouldn't stop me from listening to the TV and/or the radio, too.
When the 6.8 earthquake hit Nisqually, WA (2/28/2001)
In my current house, in Seattle, typing "EARTHQUAKE!" into my chat and MUSH windows before diving over to the doorframe leading into the kitchen to ride it out. That was actually pretty fun. The Murknet stayed up - we didn't even trigger the UPS alarm - so I was feeding out-of-state people reassuring information.
When terrorists knocked over the World Trade Center (9/11/2001)
I was still asleep for most of it. I got up, grabbed breakfast, heard something on the radio that I thought was an ad for a movie before turning it off, and went to check up on my overnight mail with my morning tea. I'd sent out a reply to the last message on the previous thread going on in this one mailing list - about, incredibly, light bulbs - when Phil replied saying, "HEY DAR WE'RE NOT TALKING ABOUT LIGHT BULBS ANYMORE. TURN ON YOUR T.V." And then three days of being glued to the set and noticing how quiet everyone was.
