So I tested some plastic melting by heating an aluminium sheet in an oven for a while and using that as a bottom piece, and a clothes iron as a top piece, as suggested by [personal profile] vatine.

It's better than straight oven, by, like, a lot. There wasn't enough sustain in the heat to really make it work, but I got a fairly flat if rather ragged sheet of plastic.

I also learned that the pressure is really important. At least with the temperatures I can feel reasonably safe using in my kitchen.

So, with some hesitation, I'm going to try the T-shirt press. That's a much better version of what I was actually trying, so... hopefully. Hopefully.

Anyway, that's one of the things I did this weekend. I also did some more work to improve the custom fan cowl's backplane and the backplane I have now - a minor variation on the previous one with a better clip for attachment to the metal main backplane - is by far the most solid I've had. Now this really does feel like a manufactured part - at least, so far, in the one day I've been using it. Let's hope this version holds!

I wonder if Teflon coated ironing board covers would help with the t-shirt press. They're designed for high temperatures and to be non-stick. Or do they already have something like that?
