new furnace day

today was new furnace day and it looks like we got maximum value out of the old one - when they pulled it today we found two cracks in the heat exchanger, and it had finally started to rot out in the way most of this model did within two years, which is why they were recalled.

so well done us, I guess?

also got a merv 15 filter system so take that, fire season!

tomorrow they finish up some details on the furnace install, then they'll start on the top floor semi-ductless AC for further no, fuck you fire season adventures. that'll take the rest of the week.

i feel a lot better having the whole-house air-filter working now though. fire season has been nasty.

Oh, so much better. So glad you have high quality air treatment. We did that a couple of years ago, and it was real.

Did you get a heat pump system?

I don't know how old my furnace was when I had it replaced, but suspect it was installed when the house was remodelled in the Sixties. No cracks, but it was definitely past its "best by" date.

We've already had pretty good via a series of HEPA + other filtration filters across the house. But they can't keep up with fire season, and we have to turn up the noisy one, and all that. So I'm really glad we've done this, whether what I'm feeling right now is psychosomatic or not. xD

Not on the main system. What we're doing is going from 80% to 96% efficient on natural gas, because we can afford that, and also adding to the top level ceiling only what they call a "ducted ductless" system, which is to say, a heat pump/exchanger outside, with a distributor in the attic which will dump cool air out of ducts in the attic floor/top level ceiling.

The way we're getting cooling to the floor below that is via the previously-completely-pointless-and-annoying two-storey front entry. It's on the eastern face of the building (which is hottest by a lot) and have a big 14" vent dumping air into the living room's east side and Anna's office/the library. Worst case, we have the top floor as a refuge in fire season; best case, we're as well off (but with dramatically less noise) than we were with the two wheelabout AC units that I hate so much because of how loud they are.
