I honestly don't get the hate for the newly revised White House Rose Garden. Perhaps because I expected worse, but still. It seems perfectly reasonable, and there are parts I rather like.

I do think exposing the wall behind the colonnade was a misstep, and that the trees were doing the space a real service by hiding the terrible fenestration. But at the same time, I think the pathwork makes the space feel larger, and I like the way the space opened up a bit more, particularly opposite the colonnade wall. I think the lawn beyond the rose garden needs some work to better integrate into it, but that can be work done later.

Yeah, I don't get why it's supposedly such an evil act either. I had read that she had changed it back to something more resembling an earlier design, so I looked up some historical photos and ... well, it wouldn't be my choice, but it seems like she just went for a little more formal approach vs. the more freeform contemporary thing it had been? With more actual roses (in recent photos I thought I saw tulips)? Meh? *big shrug* (although I'm not keen on the removal of the trees, but then I wouldn't be.)
