The enrollment of new international students in America could reach its lowest point since the end of World War II, according to a new analysis. U.S. consulate closures, travel bans and other challenges mean that when U.S. university administrators open their doors in Fall 2020, they are unlikely to see many new faces from abroad. New information obtained from the State Department on consulate openings and administration policy may further discourage students and universities.
“The enrollment of new international students at U.S. universities in the Fall 2020-21 academic year is projected to decline 63% to 98% from the 2018-19 level, with between 6,000 to 12,000 new international students at the low range, and 87,000 to 100,000 at the high range,” according to an analysis by the National Foundation for American Policy. “The decline of as many as 263,000 students from the 2018-19 academic year total of approximately 269,000 new international students would be the lowest level of new international students since after World War II when the numbers started to be tracked. The 12,000 level represents new international students if only new students from Mexico and Canada enrolled. Given uncertainties surrounding even Mexican and Canadian students, the most pessimistic forecast would put the number of new enrolled international students at only half the 12,000 level.”
The enrollment of new international students was approximately 7,800 in 1948-49, the first year on record, based on an analysis of data from the Institute of International Education. The last year the level of enrollment of new international students was as low as 100,000 was the 1981-82 academic year.

Washington’s NFL team drops ‘Redskins’ name after 87 years

WASHINGTON (AP) — The Washington NFL franchise announced Monday it is dropping the “Redskins” name and Indian head logo, bowing to recent pressure from sponsors and decades of criticism that they are offensive to Native Americans.
A new name must still be selected for one of the oldest and most storied teams in the National Football League, and it’s unclear how soon that will happen. But for now, arguably the most polarizing name in North American professional sports is gone at a time of reckoning over racial injustice, iconography and racism in the U.S.
The team said it is “retiring” the name and logo and that owner Dan Snyder and coach Ron Rivera are working closely to develop a new moniker and design. The announcement came on the old letterhead with the Redskins name because the team technically retains it until a new one is approved.

Gov. Bill Lee on Monday signed into law the state's wide-ranging abortion ban, legislation that will enact some of the nation's most restrictive abortion regulations.
UPDATE:Moments after Gov. Lee signed it, court halts Tennessee's restrictive abortion law
In addition to banning abortions after the point a fetal heartbeat can be detected, which is as early as six weeks, the legislation, which takes effect immediately, also prohibits the procedure:
* If the doctor knows that the woman is seeking an abortion because of the child's sex or race;
* If the doctor knows the woman is seeking an abortion due to to a diagnosis of Down syndrome; and
* For juveniles in custody of the Department of Children's Services, including removing the current option to petition a judge for permission.
While there is an exception to the restrictions if a woman's life is in danger, there are no exceptions for rape or incest.
