These are all short today. I've been swamped doing other things, and honestly, that's better for my health, but this is necessary. Here's what I've managed to wedge in.

This tweet is the latest update to the Greg Doucette police violence thread as of end of day June 16.

So I was talking with my mom about #DefundThePolice. And she asked me a question: how could what happened to Rayshard Brooks happen, at this moment, in this uprising? How could police keep...doing this?

So this is what I said.

[THREAD]

police brutality against people protesting police brutality is radicalizing people against the police. tonight’s march in richmond is specifically a response to the cops running people over last night.

[NEXT]

the person addressing the crowd in monroe park right now was hit by the cop car last night. he says he used think perhaps reform was possible... he doesn’t anymore.

[NEXT]

at lee circle last night, he saw the car approach the crowd and he ran toward it, thinking it was another KKK attack. “i didn’t know it was a police vehicle until i put my hand on it. and he revved the engine.”

MILL CREEK — A Snohomish County sheriff’s deputy who is seen in a video punching a suspect lying on the ground was fired last year for allegedly violating department policy. He was reinstated in January by newly elected Sheriff Adam Fortney.

The deputy, Evan Twedt, took part in covering up a warrantless search in 2017, former Sheriff Ty Trenary concluded last year after reviewing an internal investigation.

Since his rehiring by Fortney, who used to be his patrol supervisor, Twedt has been back on patrol. The video, which recently surfaced on social media, shows him hitting a man repeatedly during an arrest on May 28.

That use of force is under a supervisor’s review. According to sheriff’s spokesperson Courtney O’Keefe, Fortney is aware of the incident, but the sheriff did not offer further comment.

Police injure journalists covering Portland protests

PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) — At least two Portland-based reporters were injured while covering protests against police brutality over the weekend.

Oregonian journalist Beth Nakamura recounted police slamming her with a baton Friday while the next night, Portland Tribune reporter Zane Sparling said he was shoved into a wall by an officer and hit by a crowd control munition, Oregon Public Broadcasting reported.

The reporters said they identified themselves to police as press. In both incidents, the reporters were told by police, in what the journalists described as profanity-laced responses, that their press credentials did not matter.

The incidents against reporters were the first publicly questioned by the mayor since the uprising began over the police killing of George Floyd in Minneapolis.

OHSU Volunteers Arrested, Assaulted by Police During Portland Protests
by Alex Zielinski • Jun 16, 2020

https://www.portlandmercury.com/blogtown/2020/06/16/28543490/ohsu-volunteers-arrested-assaulted-by-police-during-portland-protests

June 2 was the first day a group of graduate students from Oregon Health and Science University (OHSU) set up a pop-up canopy and table in Chapman Square and offered first-aid, snacks, and respite to protesting Portlanders. Since then, the volunteers have doled out ice packs to people injured by rubber bullets, goggles for people prepared for tear gas, and face masks to keep protesters safe during a pandemic. Most of the items had been donated by fellow students, faculty, and members of the public—with OHSU sponsoring the table and tent later on.

The OHSU group has also watched Portland police officers' shifting response to the nightly demonstrations. That's why on Saturday, June 13, volunteers Michael Martinez and Adrian Baris were expecting a relatively low-key evening. The night had been preceded by evenings with little officer presence behind the fence that had been erected between protesters and the Multnomah County Justice Center—and, in Martinez's words, "Police had stopped attacking entire crowds, just individual people later in the night."

That changed Saturday. By the end of the night, Martinez was in jail, Baris was rattled from being shoved by the police, and all of their donated items had been confiscated by the Portland Police Bureau (PPB).

Their story of unwarranted abuse and arrest by police officers is just one of many anecdotes we've heard from non-violent Portlanders who've attended the nightly demonstrations. But for the students, and administrators at OHSU who support their work, it only adds to the growing concerns around police abuse of power in Portland.

Two Police Unions Spread A False Rumor That Shake Shack Workers Intentionally Poisoned Three NYPD Cops
The union president initially blamed the disproven milkshake attack allegations on "vicious criminals who dislike us simply because of the uniform we wear."

After three New York City police officers became ill Monday night after they drank milkshakes purchased at a Shake Shack, two police unions claimed, without evidence, that the cops were "intentionally poisoned" by restaurant workers.

The NYPD said early Tuesday morning that it had investigated the incident and determined there was no criminal wrongdoing by the employees. Investigators believe the substance in their drinks was a cleaning solution that had not been fully cleared out of the milkshake machine, according to CNN.

"After a thorough investigation by the NYPD’s Manhattan South investigators, it has been determined that there was no criminality by shake shack’s employees," NYPD Chief of Detectives Rodney Harrison tweeted.

Following news that the officers had fallen sick, the Detectives' Endowment Association (DEA), a union for NYPD detectives, on Monday night tweeted an "urgent safety message" about the alleged incident, saying "three of our brothers in blue were intentionally poisoned by one or more workers" at a Shake Shack located in lower Manhattan.

"After tasting the milk shakes they purchased they became ill, making it necessary for them to go to an area hospital," DEA President Paul DiGiacomo said in a statement.

The officers were taken to a hospital where they were treated and released.

DiGiacomo said officers must "be more vigilant than ever" and urged them "to not buy food from locations unknown to you."

"Police in New York City and across the country are under attack by vicious criminals who dislike us simply because of the uniform we wear," DiGiacomo said. "Emboldened by pandering elected officials, these cowards will go to great lengths to harm any member of law enforcement."

TACOMA, Wash — New video shows a Tacoma police officer placing Manuel Ellis in a brief chokehold on the night he was killed in police custody, as another officer uses a Taser on Ellis.

The actions seen on the video contradicts a claim by attorneys for the officers, who said that no one choked Manuel Ellis.

The video was shot on a cell phone by a bystander and released to the public by the Tacoma Action Collective on Tuesday. James Bible, an attorney for Manuel Ellis’ family, said the video was damning evidence of a cover-up.
