Now that the DJIA has dropped over 1800 points in a day over this, I guess people are remembering COVID-19 exists.

Pretty sure the US is just gonna let it kill everybody it can. Really am.

Christ, what a shitpile of a country.

New coronavirus cases almost double after reopening, says Alabama expert

The average number of new coronavirus cases each day in Alabama has jumped from about 250 during lockdown to almost 500 in recent days, said Dr. Jodie Dionne-Odom, a specialist in infectious diseases at UAB Health.

Overall, hospitals in the state still have enough capacity to handle the increase in cases, Dionne-Odom said. But she warned that 90 percent of Alabama counties are still reporting new cases every day.

“It’s important to get the message out that COVID-19 is not gone,” Dionne-Odom said.

Gov. Kay Ivey announced a stay-at-home order that went into effect April 4. Alabama health officials lifted many restrictions on retail and other businesses starting in May. Travel and socializing increased that month, especially around the Memorial Day holiday. Mass gatherings to protest the killing of George Floyd have also increased in recent weeks.

“We are not surprisingly seeing cases go up as we open," Dionne-Odom said. “There is clearly a relationship between reopening and the number of cases we are seeing right now.”

Alarming rise in virus cases as states roll back lockdowns

NEW YORK (AP) — States are rolling back lockdowns, but the coronavirus isn't done with the U.S.

Cases are rising in nearly half the states, according to an Associated Press analysis, a worrying trend that could intensify as people return to work and venture out during the summer.

In Arizona, hospitals have been told to prepare for the worst. Texas has more hospitalized COVID-19 patients than at any time before. And the governor of North Carolina said recent jumps caused him to rethink plans to reopen schools or businesses.

There is no single reason for the surges. In some cases, more testing has revealed more cases. In others, local outbreaks are big enough to push statewide tallies higher. But experts think at least some are due to lifting stay-at-home orders, school and business closures, and other restrictions put in place during the spring to stem the virus's spread.

The increase in infections pulled stocks down sharply Thursday on Wall Street, dragging the Dow Jones Industrial Average more than 1,800 points lower and giving the S&P 500 its worst day in nearly three months. The infections deflated recent optimism that the economy could recover quickly from its worst crisis in decades.

The virus is also gradually fanning out.

“It is a disaster that spreads,” said Dr. Jay Butler, who oversees coronavirus response work at the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. “It’s not like there’s an entire continental seismic shift and everyone feels the shaking all at once.”

Ohio Health Director Dr. Amy Acton has resigned, effectively immediately, Gov. Mike DeWine announced Thursday. The public health official became a lauded national figure during the coronavirus pandemic, but has also faced challenges to her authority.

During his daily coronavirus briefing, DeWine said Acton told him this week it was "time for her to step down."

She will stay in his administration as a chief health adviser, he said.

"She will continue to be able to serve the people of the state of Ohio in a very, very meaningful way, and continue to help me in a very meaningful way," DeWine said.

Face masks no longer required in Orange County as more businesses like gyms get OK to reopen

SANTA ANA, Calif. (KABC) -- Days after Orange County's chief health officer resigned amid criticism over her order requiring the public to wear face masks, the new interim health officer lifted that requirement as other businesses were given the green light to reopen.

Dr. Clayton Chau, the interim health officer and recently appointed Health Care Agency director, announced Thursday that while facial coverings are no longer required to be worn by the public, their use is still strongly recommended to help reduce the spread of the coronavirus as more sectors of the economy begin to resume operations. He added that the decision was not prompted by pushback from the public, but rather in an effort to be consistent with state language on masks.

"I want to be clear. This does not diminish the importance of face coverings. I stand with the public health experts and believe wearing cloth face coverings help to slow the spread of COVID-19 in our community and save lives," Chau said.

The face covering order in the county had been at the center of controversy, with residents speaking out against the mandate at public meetings. Former health officer Dr. Nichole Quick was receiving heightened security due to threats stemming from the mask order. Sheriff Don Barnes last month said he would not ask his deputies to enforce the order.

Coronavirus infections appear to spike in U.S. even as they decline elsewhere

While many countries are seeing a decline in COVID-19 cases, infections in the United States appear to be spiking, according to documents obtained by Yahoo News.

In a Centers for Disease Control and Prevention document dated June 9, the U.S. had the highest spike of percentage change in daily cases, with a 36.5 percent jump in recent days. Of the top 10 countries in total cases, that is the biggest spike by a significant margin, compared with drops in cases in Brazil, Spain, Italy, Germany and Iran and growths of under 5 percent in Russia, India and Peru.

A June 9 Federal Emergency Management Agency document shows the same spike in cases. The rolling average of deaths in the U.S., per the FEMA document, is starting to trend up over 1,000 per day.

According to tracking from Johns Hopkins University, the United States has had more than 1.9 million positive cases of the coronavirus and 112,000 deaths, the highest reported in either category of any country in the world.

Gov. Reynolds lifts 50 percent capacity restriction for bars, restaurants starting Friday

(KWWL) Governor Reynolds announced Wednesday she is further relaxing restrictions and allowing businesses to reopen in more capacities.

Effective Friday, June 12 at 8 a.m., the 50 percent capacity limit currently in place for businesses will be lifted. Reynolds said that restaurants, bars and theaters are to continue following 6 feet social distancing requirements.

"Eliminating the capacity restrictions will allow businesses the flexibility to adjust their specific operations accordingly to best meet the needs of their employees and customers," Reynolds said.

Establishments will implement reasonable measures to continue social distancing, increase hygiene practices and other public health measures to reduce COVID-19 transmission risk.

Swimming pools and senior centers can also open under the same guidelines.

"These changes are a result of the positive forward momentum that we're generating in Iowa and we must keep it going," Reynolds said.

Coronavirus has killed 5 poultry plant workers and infected more than 200 other employees on Maryland’s Eastern Shore

The coronavirus has killed five workers from two Eastern Shore poultry plants and infected more than 200 other employees, Maryland health officials said Thursday.

Three workers employed at the Amick Farms plant in Hurlock in Dorchester County died, and the virus killed two employees from a Perdue plant in Salisbury, said Mike Ricci, a spokesman for Gov. Larry Hogan.

Amick Farms reported 150 infections, while Perdue found 58, after the state conducted widespread testing at the facilities in recent weeks, he said.

Health officials traced hundreds of coronavirus cases to Eastern Shore poultry plants in late April, when it became apparent the Salisbury area was an emerging national hot spot for COVID-19 infections.

The outbreaks prompted visits from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and adjustments to plant operations, including replacement of fans used to keep workers cool and installation of plastic barriers between work stations.

[IOWA] Gov. Reynolds lifts 50 percent capacity restriction for bars, restaurants starting Friday

Yikes. Here in Santa Clara County, no such things indoors are yet permitted; especially no bars, and where a restaurant has a bar area it must remain closed. Outdoor is at something like 25% capacity. Indoor retail must have no more than 1 employee per 300 gross square feet of floorspace (including things like warehouse areas) and no more than 1 patron per 200 square feet open to the public. (Which is a square about 14 feet on a side, or a circle of about 16 feet diameter, so probably yer 6-foot guideline plus a little because a person is not a zero-dimensional point then rounded up to the next hundred or something.)
