Only three, but as a general warning: COVID-19 outbreaks are getting far worse, and not particularly in cities with large protests. Arizona's infection rate is skyrocketing, for example.

It's about to get really bad again. Be ready.

In a wide-ranging talk to biotech executives, Dr. Anthony Fauci delivered a grim assessment of the devastation wrought around the world by the coronavirus.

COVID-19 is the disease that Fauci always said would be his “worst nightmare” — a new, highly contagious respiratory infection that causes a significant amount of illness and death.

“In a period of four months, it has devastated the whole world,” Fauci, director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, said Tuesday during a conference held by BIO, the Biotechnology Innovation Organization. “And it isn’t over yet.”

His discussion with a moderator was conducted remotely and recorded for presentation to conference participants. Although he had known that an outbreak like this could occur, one aspect has surprised him, he said, and that is “how rapidly it just took over the planet.”

President Trump’s demands to hold the Republican 2020 convention inside a packed arena despite a still-raging pandemic appear to have taken one step closer to being met. The Washington Post reports that party officials have “tentatively settled” on Jacksonville, Florida, as the new location for Republican National Convention in August. Trump demanded that the convention be moved from its original host city of Charlotte because North Carolina officials declined to promise that they would allow the arena to be packed full of people due to the obvious public-health risk. Trump reportedly told North Carolina Gov. Roy Cooper during a phone call late last month: “I don’t want to be sitting in a place that’s 50 percent empty... We can’t do social distancing.” Jacksonville has reportedly emerged as the front-runner to replace Charlotte, though there are some concerns the northern Florida city may not have enough hotel rooms to accommodate the event. Republican officials were reportedly in Jacksonville this week to scout out the city and surrounding areas. Florida is in the middle of a string of days with more than 1,000 new cases of coronavirus being reported.

Even as the United States begins to lift its coronavirus lockdown orders, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention is putting out dire warnings about increasing infection numbers. A CDC report dated June 9 shows infection numbers in the U.S. increasing by 36 percent per day. The majority of other countries listed, including the United Kingdom, Italy, and Spain, enjoyed declining infection rates. Only Russia, Peru, and India’s infection numbers were growing, and even then by less than 5 percent. Health experts the world over have warned that the pandemic is far from finished, and some have even predicted another 100,000 Americans will die from it. Nearly 2 million people have tested positive for COVID-19 in the U.S., and more than 110,000 have died.
