The Daily 202: Sitting in Lincoln’s shadow, Trump casts himself as a victim amid coronavirus crisis

President Trump gave a two-hour interview to Fox News on Sunday night in the Lincoln Memorial. His mix of self-pity and self-congratulation was startling, especially given the backdrop, as more than 67,000 Americans have been killed by an invisible enemy that has yet to be contained and the country plunges deeper into the worst economic crisis since the Great Depression.
“They always said ... nobody got treated worse than [Abraham] Lincoln. I believe I am treated worse,” said Trump, pointing toward the statue of a president who was assassinated days after winning the Civil War. “You know, I believe we've done more than any president in the history of our country in the first three years, three-and-a-half years. I really believe that.”

It’s safe to reopen states, Trump says as governors grapple with loosening restrictions
3 May 2020
https://www.seattletimes.com/nation-world/protesters-with-no-masks-distancing-are-devastatingly-worrisome-coronavirus-coordinator-birx-says/
WASHINGTON – President Donald Trump on Sunday sought to reassure Americans that it is safe for states to reopen amid the coronavirus pandemic, offering support to protesters who have railed against the lockdowns across the country.
“I really believe that you can go to parks, you can go to beaches . . . [if] you stay away a certain amount,” Trump said during a Fox News Channel town hall at the Lincoln Memorial in Washington.
Trump said it’s possible to “satisfy both” anti-lockdown protesters and those who are afraid to resume public life. He noted that Americans have been wearing face masks and social distancing in recent weeks and said “you’re going to have to do that for a while,” even as states reopen their economies.
He scaled up the estimate he has used for the number of expected dead – projecting that the U.S. toll may be as high as 100,000 – while emphasizing that he takes the novel coronavirus seriously and noting that three of his friends have died after contracting it.
Trump had previously said that about 65,000 Americans would probably die of covid-19, the disease caused by the virus.
Trump’s comments come as governors continue to grapple with reopening pains amid ongoing pushback against coronavirus restrictions. They also come as the administration is increasing its efforts to blame China for the virus, which has now taken the lives of more than 67,000 people in the United States.
Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer, a Democrat, on Sunday defended her decision to extend a stay-home order to May 15, declaring that “whether you agree with me or not, I’m working to protect your life if you live in the state of Michigan.”

Protesters at the Michigan Capitol can't just play politics with a pandemic or we'll all lose

You may have seen photos and videos of heavily armed men with large rifles at our state Capitol in Lansing, Michigan, on Thursday, some screaming in the faces of state police officers wearing simple cloth surgical masks, and wonder what in the world is happening in Michigan. I don’t blame you.
Certainly, you would if you had seen the photo of a noose hung on the back of a truck, or a sign referring to our governor, Gretchen Whitmer, as a tyrant with the text “Tyrants Get the Rope,” or if you had seen images of protestors with a swastika, Confederate flags or a massive Trump “bridge” float.

Excess U.S. deaths hit estimated 37,100 in pandemic’s early days, far more than previously known
By Emma Brown, Andrew Ba Tran and Reis Thebault
2 May 2020
https://www.washingtonpost.com/investigations/2020/05/02/excess-deaths-during-covid-19/
The United States recorded an estimated 37,100 excess deaths as the novel coronavirus spread across the country in March and the first two weeks of April, nearly 13,500 more than are now attributed to covid-19 for that same period, according to an analysis of federal data conducted for The Washington Post by a research team led by the Yale School of Public Health.
The Yale team’s analysis suggests that the number of excess deaths accelerated as the pandemic took hold. There were 16,600 estimated excess deaths just in the week of April 5 to April 11, compared with 20,500 over the prior five weeks.
Though the team’s estimate of the impact early in the outbreak already paints a picture of unusually high mortality, the number is certain to grow as more deaths are reported to the federal government on a rolling basis.

Trump administration projecting 3K daily coronavirus deaths by June
By Brett Samuels - 05/04/20
https://thehill.com/homenews/administration/495971-trump-administration-projecting-3k-daily-coronavirus-deaths-by-june
The Trump administration is projecting that the United States could see up to 3,000 deaths per day from the coronavirus by June 1, a person familiar with internal documents confirmed to The Hill on Monday.
Data and modeling from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) show that the federal government is expecting the number of cases and deaths associated with the pandemic to continue mounting, even as President Trump and other officials push for states to lift restrictions meant to slow the spread of the virus in favor of reopening businesses.
The New York Times, which was the first to report on the projections, posted the documents, which show the CDC and Federal Emergency Management Agency forecast a steady increase in the number of new cases per day.
The projections show the U.S. reaching 200,000 new cases daily by June 1 with a daily death toll of roughly 3,000. The number of daily cases peaked in late April at just over 30,000. The current daily death toll varies, but typically falls between 1,500 and 2,000.
The report warns that the Great Lakes region, Southern California and parts of the South and Northeast are all seeing increasing case loads.
The CDC did not immediately respond to a request for comment from The Hill.

Date: 2020-05-05 02:31 am (UTC)The county where I live has been adding cases at about 500/day for weeks now. It's not speeding up, but it's not flattening either. There are a lot more people wearing masks than there used to be, but I still see some without masks, or with the mask pulled down below their nostrils. And people still do things like hold the door for someone else, instead of keeping six feet distance.
