Today's News (2020/4/5) Ludicrous Edition
Apr. 5th, 2020 09:04 pmHaven't been able to find an article on Govenor Newsom's attempt to put together a confederation of states to do joint supplies purchases. If I see one, I'll add it. Someone on Twitter called it a "Pope of Avignon" moment, and I don't think that's entirely right? But I don't think it's entirely wrong either.

Sorry. This isn’t our “Pearl Harbor” moment. That was a surprise, dastardly attack by an enemy nation. This is our “Chernobyl” moment: a preventable catastrophe that was denied, downplayed and mismanaged until tens of thousands were dead.

Inslee continues criticism of Trump: It’s ‘ludicrous’ we don’t have national effort against coronavirus

Washington Gov. Jay Inslee continued his criticism of the Trump administration in a national TV appearance Sunday morning, lambasting what he called the federal government’s lack of leadership during the coronavirus crisis.
“This is ludicrous that we do not have a national effort in this,” Inslee said on Meet The Press. “I mean, the surgeon general alluded to Pearl Harbor. Can you imagine if Franklin Delano Roosevelt said, ‘I’ll be right behind you, Connecticut. Good luck building those battleships.'”
Inslee said he’d like to see a national stay-at-home order, rather than the piecemeal ones put in place so far by states.
“Even if Washington gets on top of this fully, if another state doesn’t, it can come back and come across our borders two months from now,” Inslee said.
Inslee has been calling on President Donald Trump to order manufacturers to switch their production to prioritize things needed to battle the pandemic, such as masks, face shields, gowns and testing equipment. But Trump has refused. Inslee has resorted to pleading with Washington manufacturers to produce the equipment.
“We don’t have enough test kits by far in my state or anywhere in the United States,” Inslee said Sunday. “So we governors, Republicans and Democrats, have been urging the president to do what he should, which is if he wants to be a wartime president, be a wartime president. Show some leadership. Mobilize the industrial base of the United States. That’s what we need.”
Washington has received only half of the ventilators it has requested from the federal government, according to state officials, and only a portion of the protective equipment.

Washington sending more than 400 ventilators for non-coronavirus patients to New York, harder hit states

Washington will return more than 400 of the 500 ventilators it recently received from the federal government, so they can go to New York and other states harder hit by the coronavirus crisis, Gov. Jay Inslee said Sunday.
After requesting 1,000 ventilators from the Strategic National Stockpile, Washington last month received 500.
The national stockpile ventilators are not suitable for treating COVID-19 patients, state officials said. That's because those individuals generally need a higher amount of pressure support into their lungs than the ventilators from the national stockpile can provide, Jessica Baggett, a spokeswoman for the state's Joint Information Center said.

Republican Senate hopeful Shiva Ayyadurai calls for firing of U.S. pandemic-control czar Dr. Anthony Fauci

Republicans have made tremendous political headway with their base through the term "fake news".
It's undermined confidence in the mainstream media and created an us-and-them perception of the relationship between the White House press corps and U.S. president Donald Trump.
But now, some Republicans are starting to use the term "fake science" to describe what they see as a globalist attempt to shut down the economy and benefit Big Pharma and the government of China.
The most articulate advocate of this point of view is Shiva Ayyadurai, a Mumbai-born and U.S.-raised entrepreneur with a PhD in biological engineering from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.
...
In one YouTube interview, Ayyadurai even rejected the widespread view that HIV causes AIDS, also calling this "fake science".
In the same interview, Ayyadurai expressed admiration for molecular and cell biologist Peter Duesberg, who was ostracized by other scientists after publishing a paper in 1987 questioning whether HIV caused AIDS.
...
Ayyadurai accused Fauci of not providing the president with sufficient insights into how the immune system operates, leading to public policies that are wrecking the U.S. economy.
And as this is occurring, he claimed, China will use its vast amounts of U.S. currency to buy up undervalued American assets, including real estate.
"This will serve one country: China," Ayyadurai insisted. "China is a country that will profit from this."
As of this writing, Trump has not fired Fauci.

Trump doubles down on unproven drugs to treat and prevent coronavirus
By Arman Azad, Gina Yu and Nicky Robertson CNN

https://www.cnn.com/2020/04/05/politics/coronavirus-hydroxychloroquine-trump-briefing/index.html
(CNN)President Donald Trump on Sunday again doubled down on an unproven therapy for the novel coronavirus: hydroxychloroquine.
Without citing evidence, he said it's a "great" and "powerful" anti-malaria drug "and there are signs that it works on this, some very strong signs."
For people without heart problems, Trump recommended combining hydroxychloroquine with azithromycin, a common antibiotic. He said azithromycin "will kill certain things that you don't want living within your body."
Yet there is little reliable evidence that the drugs -- either alone or in combination -- are effective at treating the novel coronavirus.
Still, Trump said: "What do you have to lose? What do you have to lose?"
For doctors, nurses and first responders, Trump suggested the drugs could be taken as a preventative. "They say taking it before the fact is good, but what do you have to lose?"
Experts do not suggest taking hydroxychloroquine as a preventive for Covid-19 because there is no evidence yet to suggest it protects against contracting the virus.

In many places they are having serious difficulty getting the drug, because of this needless shortage.

Date: 2020-04-06 01:53 pm (UTC)The "what do you have to lose?" approach assumes that everyone who has a heart problem knows about it, and will think about it if a doctor suggests "try this." The world is full of people who don't remember their entire medical history, and whose current doctors don't have all their medical records, clear back to childhood or even adolescence. (Electronic medical records sound like a wonderful thing. In practice, they mean that my records here in Massachusetts don't even show the first year or so that I was seeing my current doctor, because Mount Auburn changed systems and screwed up on the data migration.)
*sigh* I have *feelings* on this one, and I'm not even working in that field.
