I wasn't going to do a second post today but there's enough going on in here I'm going ahead. Watch particularly for the two main forks the rightists are coalescing around: 1) that it's fake, and 2) that it's not fake but it's fine to let millions die.

The first response is inevitable.

The second is not.

Also, the usual bonus racism.

Twitter Deletes Post From The Federalist Proposing ‘Chickenpox Parties’ to Deliberately Spread Coronavirus

Twitter temporarily locked the account of The Federalist Wednesday after the conservative opinion site published a piece, written by a dermatologist based in Oregon, that proposed the deliberate spread of the coronavirus in order to boost immunity to the disease.

The op-ed, penned by Dr. Douglas Perednia, proposed an “outside the box” solution to the current pandemic that flies in the face of advice from experts, including Dr. Anthony Fauci, who are urging social distancing.

Perednia wrote that a “controlled infection” — modeled after the “chickenpox parties” of the last century — is the measure that should be considered.

A Controlled Voluntary Infection (CVI) “involves allowing people at low risk for severe complications to deliberately contract COVID-19 in a socially and medically responsible way so they become immune to the disease,” the doctor wrote.

“It is time to think outside the box and seriously consider a somewhat unconventional approach to COVID-19: controlled voluntary infection,” The Federalist wrote in a now-removed tweet linking to the op-ed.

The media must stop live-broadcasting Trump’s dangerous, destructive coronavirus briefings

More and more each day, President Trump is using his daily briefings as a substitute for the campaign rallies that have been forced into extinction by the spread of the novel coronavirus.

These White House sessions — ostensibly meant to give the public critical and truthful information about this frightening crisis — are in fact working against that end.

Rather, they have become a daily stage for Trump to play his greatest hits to captive audience members. They come in search of life-or-death information, but here’s what they get from him instead:

Hospitals consider universal do-not-resuscitate orders for coronavirus patients
Worry that ‘all hands’ responses may expose doctors and nurses to infection prompts debate about prioritizing the needs of the many over the one

https://www.washingtonpost.com/health/2020/03/25/coronavirus-patients-do-not-resucitate/

Hospitals on the front lines of the pandemic are engaged in a heated private debate over a calculation few have encountered in their lifetimes — how to weigh the “save at all costs” approach to resuscitating a dying patient against the real danger of exposing doctors and nurses to the contagion of coronavirus.

The conversations are driven by the realization that the risk to staff amid dwindling stores of protective equipment — such as masks, gowns and gloves — may be too great to justify the conventional response when a patient “codes,” and their heart or breathing stops.

Northwestern Memorial Hospital in Chicago has been discussing a universal do-not-resuscitate policy for infected patients, regardless of the wishes of the patient or their family members — a wrenching decision to prioritize the lives of the many over the one.

Trump is risking a terrible tragedy to avoid responsibility for the recession

Imagine you get on an airplane and the pilot announces: “Folks, we have two faulty engines. But we know you’re eager to get to your destination. So we’re going to take off and try to fix the engines in flight. We figure the risk of a crash is worth it, because we don’t want you to get bored waiting at the airport.”

If you were a passenger, you would be terrified. That is exactly how I feel as an American when I hear President Trump say he wants the country “opened up and just raring to go by Easter,” i.e., April 12. The president has done many foolish and ill-advised things. But until now he has mainly been a threat to our liberties. Now he is threatening our lives. Nothing that Trump has done to date will be remotely as destructive as trying to reopen the economy while a pandemic continues to rage out of control. He is going to spike the curve, rather than flatten it.

The United States is about to overtake Italy as the country with the largest number of active coronavirus cases. As of Tuesday, we had more than 50,000 confirmed cases (the actual number is far higher) and about 700 deaths. The number of infected people continues to double every three days, meaning we will have more than 100,000 cases by Friday. Yet what Trump is hearing from the right-wing echo chamber — and now translating into policy — is that the cure is worse than the disease. As Fox News host Laura Ingraham tweeted: “A global recession would be worse for our people than the Great Depression.”

As The Coronavirus Crisis Heats Up, Why Isn't America Hearing From The CDC?
March 25, 20201:45 PM ET
Nell Greenfieldboyce

At a time when the nation is desperate for authoritative information about the coronavirus pandemic, the country's foremost agency for fighting infectious disease outbreaks has gone conspicuously silent.

...

"This has never happened before. In the nearly 75 years that the CDC has existed, in every single infectious disease outbreak the country has dealt with, the CDC has been central. It's been at the decision table, and it's been at the podium," says former CDC director Tom Frieden, who is now president and CEO of the global health initiative Resolve to Save Lives.

"I feel less safe because it's not clear that the CDC's expertise is feeding into the decisions that are being made, and these are life and death decisions," says Frieden. "We are less safe because the CDC doesn't have the voice and the role it needs to have."

Trump Campaign Wants Coronavirus Ad Taken Down: Campaign Update

(Bloomberg) -- The Trump campaign asked TV stations in swing states to take down an ad featuring the president calling coronavirus a “hoax” that his allies say is misleading.

The ad from Priorities USA shows the curve of U.S. cases growing from Jan. 20 to March 22 while featuring audio of Trump downplaying the threat during that time. “The coronavirus,” Trump says at the beginning, before a second clip plays, “this is their new hoax.”

A Cruel Motive for a Costly Delay
Republican senators are threatening to block trillions of dollars in aid amid the coronavirus pandemic to deprive low-wage workers of needed help.

https://www.nytimes.com/2020/03/25/opinion/coronavirus-stimulus-senate.html

For a few hours on Wednesday, it seemed the Senate finally had mustered the will to start pumping trillions of desperately needed dollars into the American economy.

Then four Republican senators — Lindsey Graham of South Carolina, Ben Sasse of Nebraska, Tim Scott of South Carolina and Rick Scott of Florida — announced they had found a flaw in the economic stimulus legislation so grave that they would be forced to delay its passage.

The proposed unemployment benefits, they said, were much too generous.

Yes, that’s right: They worried the federal government was in danger of doing too much to help low-income workers whose jobs are being sacrificed to save lives.

President Trump says he wants the United States “raring to go” in two and a half weeks, on Easter, with “packed churches all over our country.” He and many other political conservatives suggest that we are responding to something like the flu with remedies that may be more devastating than the disease.

We created this interactive model with epidemiologists to show why quickly returning to normal could be a historic mistake that would lead to an explosion of infections, hospitalizations and deaths.

G-7 failed to agree on statement after U.S. insisted on calling coronavirus outbreak ‘Wuhan virus’

Foreign ministers representing seven major industrialized nations failed to agree on a joint statement Wednesday after the Trump administration insisted on referring to the coronavirus outbreak as the “Wuhan virus,” three officials from G-7 countries told The Washington Post.

Other nations in the group of world powers rejected the term because they viewed it as needlessly divisive at a time when international cooperation is required to slow the global pandemic and deal with the scarcity of medical supplies, officials said.

Secretary of State Mike Pompeo has brushed off criticism of his use of the term, saying it’s important to point out that the virus came from the Chinese city of Wuhan and that China’s government had a special responsibility to warn the world about its dangers.

When asked about a report that his insistence on including the term caused a rift at the Group of Seven meeting, Pompeo did not deny the charge but said that any disagreements among the group were tactical and not sweeping in nature.
