Well, this is disastrous. Never let Republicans take power, because they will never hand it over, and the stolen Supreme Court just insured they can keep doing it forever.
Republicans want a one-party state. They said so years ago. They meant it.
And what's worse is, Roberts pointed the Republicans at what they could do to make it even more complete: create at-large elections for all House positions. (If not just out-and-out slate-based elections - vote "all R" vs. "all D" in a single election statewide. Here's the Republican slate of House reps, there's the Democratic Party slate, pick one. Has the same effect.) He even gave a specific example of how something producing that effect used to be done, in... Alabama, I think? I'd have to check again... to lock the Whigs out
And he said they wouldn't stop it. Basically, that's a big blinking arrow saying, "Hey, Team!"
Once that's passed, North Carolina would be 13-0 Republican. And so would a lot of other states. Black voters become literally meaningless in the new Republican one-party system, and so do a lot of other voters. It's well too late for 2020, I think. 2022 maybe?
Watch for pro-at-large-voting propaganda. That's more likely than going to slate elections, I think - it's more familiar to people. "Our Representatives should represent ALL of us," or something like that.
Hilariously, by which I mean contemptibly, It'll probably be presented as anti-gerrymandering reform. A more effective - and complete! - way of accomplishing exactly the same thing: permanent minority rule in the House.
(The slogan might be "our ENTIRE state," but it'll probably "ALL of us." Just like "ALL lives matter." Meaning Republican whites.)
